Hi, my name is Laura. I'm 47, married and have two children ages 19 and 14. I work as a 911 police dispatcher in the town I live in. I've worked as a dispatcher for almost 9 years. For six months out of the year I work the night shift. We all do, but this year when I began in July, I noticed it is harder than before. My partner for the year just turned 29, she is beautiful and confused about her life just as much as I am about mine. I didn't realize it until about a week or two ago when we both found ourselves in the seargents office. She had been talking about applying at another department and I didn't really think she would, but that day we got into a little trouble, she dedicated herself to find another job. Today, she has an interview two cities away and I find myself wishing I could do the same, but I can't. We have a house, and we owe more than its current value. My daughter started high school today, and I couldn't take her away from her friends. My son is confused and still doesn't know what he wants to do with his life. He has a part-time job, no school ambitions, except that he wants to be a rap singer. My husband...what can I say about him, he's a great provider, a great dad, a good husband and becomes a great one when I'm about to lose my mind. Which by the way, happened last week. I wish I had time to have the nervous breakdown I so desperately deserve, but I don't. I've looked for self help books on being a police dispatcher and staying married, but there are none. Not one book! I looked at my own dispatch center and took a tally on marriages and divorce, and realized I'm one in 25% of dispatchers that are still married. I'm lost and I found this website looking for a place for my coworker. No one understands my job, and the ones that do are not my friends. So here I am.
Anne..
