She lies in her cocoon. Not knowing metamorphosis is ahead, she waits. She becomes too large for the cocoon. It breaks open. Climbing out, she quivers a while on a branch and slowly unfolds new wings.

A breeze lifts her to glide on its current, and she moves her wings in a pulse of power she has never before imagined. Other beings like herself join in the dance of wind, wings beating in synchrony. Together they RISE.

I have especially good news to share today about myself. I’m one of 10 women featured in online WISE magazine’s contest for WOMEN IN SPIRITUAL EXCELLENCE.

The editors of WISE say, “Everyone has a story that is worth telling; unfortunately we can only feature 10. Place your vote for the story you think should be featured in the next issue of WISE."

I know I have a marvelous story because I’ve told it in my book, Conversations with the Goddess: Encounter at Petra, Place of Power.

The RISE conference was fabulous. There I felt tears well up in my eyes unbidden as I connected with the remarkable women present at that event. One reason for my tears was the uplifting nature of the conference; the other reason was my recall of memories from the time I first heard of the rise of the Divine Feminine.

It all began in this way: on a January day in 1981 I lay down on my living room carpet to relax with music, and I had an experience which transformed my life. Inexplicably, a vision of a radiant and beneficent female presence appeared to me. This astonishing event was only the beginning of a journey I could never have imagined. That vision foreshadowed the book I was later to write about the Divine Feminine.

I can hear you wondering, So what’s this got to do with the 2010 RISE conference? It has a lot to do with it. You see, in 1981 I wrote down the following words.

"Humanity is coming to a turn in its journey now in which it will take on the energies and qualities characteristic of the feminine. It will…affirm its connection with earth. That is why my image is arising in human consciousness…. The females of the race will therefore acquire a new influence…. Women are already moving into influential positions in society…. Women’s rising awareness will shatter the present social molds as women turn within to find the energies uniquely theirs. In coming into touch with them, they will become empowered. This will set up an irresistible force which will alter society as it exists now. Society will become more communal in its ethic, and the work and domestic spheres will no longer be separated.

"Women will be central in creating large scale communal values; they have been long engaged in creation and maintenance of relationship and communal living on a small scale within families. Women will become central as reference points of the primal feminine energy—after they have discovered it within themselves. Right now they are busy working at asserting themselves by developing the qualities of their inner masculine. This abandonment by women of a false femininity is an essential stage, as is the stage of looking for power in cultivating masculine qualities within themselves, but the true power of the feminine is unknown. Exploring this is the next stage."

Twenty-nine years have passed since I first wrote down this passage, at a time when there was little evidence of a rise of the Divine Feminine, at a time when I didn’t know whether I would live to see the fulfillment of this prediction.

Now the future for women that was predicted is coming to pass. Now I see women like Ellie Drake who are fulfilling that vision I wrote down so long ago.

That is why I was nearly overwhelmed by tears at the RISE conference.

Leonardo da Vinci’s drawing of Universal Man is famous. Leonardo envisaged his great picture chart of the human body as a cosmography of the microcosm within the macrocosm. In other words, he believed the workings of the human body to be an analogy for the workings of the universe.
The macrocosm/microcosm schema is an ancient Greek Neo-Platonic way of seeing the same patterns reproduced in all levels of the cosmos, from the largest scale (macrocosm or universe-level) all the way down to the smallest scale (microcosm or small organism/atomic-level). In this schema the midpoint is Man. Only the male body, not the female body, was considered the proper template.

We women aren’t used to envisioning ourselves as a midpoint in the cosmic scheme of things like the Universal Woman pictured above. If the thought of woman as a midpoint in the cosmic scheme of things seems grandiose, then try this one on: women are containers of yin. Our bodies and psyches hold the space for the primal feminine energy of yin and its generative power. So in this new schema it would follow that our feminine embodiment (microcosm) is a touchstone, a key to redesigning space and ways of being that enhance the flourishing of life on our Earth (macrocosm). Think about it! And consider this passage from my book, Conversations with the Goddess: Encounter at Petra, Place of Power, in which the prediction is made that:

"Women will be given visions for building the new world. Certain women who become leaders will attain stature as visionaries equal to that of a Leonardo da Vinci. These women will be enabled to see the outlines, and even the details, of what the new collective will be. Yes, the picture of the new society will be perceived through visionary powers, just as the outlines of new societies arising throughout the history of the planet have always been perceived, though usually not described as such. "

Although we women have created and designed environments for the flourishing of life over centuries, our contributions were often undervalued, even though they have been fundamental in sustaining human life on our planet. We have also done this on a small scale, and within a larger system that we did not design -- even as we have nurtured, loved and served. Many of us struggle with too little time for ourselves, foods that are harmful, careers that leave family needs unmet, and lack of recognition of our own voice.

Now it's time for us to consciously take back and redesign spaces within the world at large, to extend to that larger world our feminine gift for creating environments that sustain and nourish life. This is essential for the family of humankind and for the sake of the planet.
