Certificates of Deposit (CDs) are a popular form of financial investment these days because they are considered to be more safe than many other types of savings and investments. This information is important for you to consider for your financial safety and wealth. It’s also important for you to ask questions of the bank. Disclaimer: This info and the tips are not intended to be comprehensive...that would take a book. What You Should Know 1. CDs at banks are insured up to $250,000 by the FDIC government agency. Know that the government has a very small percentage placed in reserve to fund these losses. The government reserve fund was only 1 to 2% of the total dollars invested in CDs, last time I checked. And it’s likely no more than that these days. Other agencies like brokerage houses, may be insured in other ways, like SIPC, and there are others too. Policy: Make sure you limit your investment in each bank to maximum of $250,000, to have the best protection. Verify if the $250,000 is per person or per member. 2. CDs offer many choices for your investment dollars: a. Varying lengths of time (3 months to 5 years) until maturity, each term with a different interest rate. b. Each bank will have different CD choices, so you likely need to contact them to see where you get the best rates, terms and other factors to meet your needs. c. These days banks (and also other investment entities like credit unions) offer special deals to attract investment capital for their coffers, hopefully to lend to businesses, home owners and others. These specials yield the best results many times in interest rates and terms. 3. Find out about potential penalties and fees before you invest. a. Are there any penalties and fees or fines, if you need to withdraw some of the money from the CD before it matures? This is very important because you want the money earning interest every day, however an emergency can arise that requires you to make a partial withdrawal of the principal of the CD and you want to know what that would cost you in real dollars. b. What are the penalties and fees? Here’s what I found, I’ll use an example of $20,000 CD. Each bank varies, so I called banks for the information. The 2 scenarios illustrate Bank 1: Any partial withdrawal before the maturity date of the CD results in a 3 month, 6-month or 1 year penalty, depending upon the term of the CD (12 month to 5-years). The penalty: your interest earnings on the entire $20k CD for the 3, 6, or 12 months penalty period are taken away, for taking out any principal amount, even $1,000 or whatever small amount. That’s a huge loss. Bank 2: Partial withdrawals (may be a limit to 1 or 2) are allowed, with a penalty for the early withdrawal. Penalty: of 3 or 6 months only on the partial amount withdrawn. The rest continues to earn interest until the CD matures, and at the rate in the original CD document. Nice. c. Most banks will automatically roll over the CD to another like-term CD if you do not redeem it within 10 days or so after it matures. You should get a notice in the mail a week or two before the maturity date, but don’t rely on that. Keep track of maturity dates yourself to insure you know what’s going on. 4. Ask questions and make requests of the bank in situations where errors or misunderstandings occur with CDs or other bank transactions. a. When a CD has automatically rolled over in error or even if you just forgot, but you don’t want it rolled over with the original terms and the new current interest rate. Ask the bank to make a special exception to reverse the rollover. Also request they include the interest earned on the new CD. A courteous and respectful, occasional request for a valid reason works. I’ve done this a couple times over many years. b. There are other examples. The point is this: take an active role in your finances, manage them, ask questions until you understand situations. The bank and all financial agencies are there to serve you – within ethical, honest, and legal parameters. 5. CDs Investments on the Internet. Be cautious with investing on the internet in CDs or any other investments. During this economic downturn people can feel desperate, so they turn to places they may see higher interest rates. The scams and frauds are higher during these times. My recommendation is to stay away from the internet for your investments now, unless you are very familiar with the source, have used them previously, and believe you can trust them. Protect your wealth, manage your wealth wisely. Your future is in your hands! Barbara Filla Financial & Business Expert Coach Barbara’s Happiness, Success and Wealth Blog

It's important that our local businesses, the mom and pop businesses, thrive because they truly provide services and products with great value for us. I believe you feel the same way. I've been concerned about them even more now because they aren't getting bailouts, tax incentives or assistance from anyone. They're responsible for themselves. Here's how we can sustain them, help them to thrive to provide us what we need now and in the future. Let's all help our neighbors. I feel we reap the greatest benefits: - Save and grow our local economy - Convenience of local products and services - Neighborly service - ask questions, get immediate responses and assistance - Preserve and grow our community for now and future - Protect our local tax base so we don't have to pick up deficit from loss of tax base - Neighbors benefitting neighbors, provides us joy and satisfaction Let this article inspire us to do more for our community. How the Locals are Trying to Save Small Businesses By Raymund Flandez on 3-25-09 Fed up with seeing local small businesses being ravaged by the economic downturn, some people are taking matters into their own hands. They’re trying to reverse the fortunes of mom-and-pop stores by becoming more organized in “buying local.” – In Fort Myers, Fla., people driving by Clancey’s Restaurant saw this huge sign outside: “Support the local economy. Patronize locally owned businesses.” Local businesses there say that for every $100 spent at a chain or national business, only $14 stays in town, but when spent at locally owned businesses, the amount triples to $45. However, code enforcement officials made the restaurant take the sign down. The restaurant is currently working to get a permit to put it back up. – A food bank in Humboldt County in California is trying to save the local economy with food stamps. Food for People is rolling out its “Bring a Million to Humboldt County” campaign, which aims to enroll everyone eligible into the food-stamp program. Businesses in the county could see an extra $12 million boost circulating in the local economy this year as food-stamp dollars get spent in local stores and local farmers’ markets. A study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service found that every dollar spent in food stamps generates $1.84 in economic activity; another study by Moody’s Economy.com found that food-stamp dollar spending generates $1.73 in economic activity. Even Congress has realized this: the economic stimulus package passed earlier this year is giving Humboldt County an additional $6.25 million in food-stamp benefits, which could generate some $11.5 million in local economic activity. But the stigma of food stamps could hamper those plans: only 46% of those that are eligible in the county participate, translating to $14 million in food stamp money that goes unused annually. –In Chicago, two entrepreneurs established a Web site this month, SupportREconomy.com, to sell $2 green “R Local Stimulus” wristbands to benefit designated 10 small businesses and charities in the area. The grassroots effort aims to donate 20% of the profits to local pharmacies and grocery stores. Since the launch in mid-March, 250 wristbands have been sold, said Joana Fischer, the co-founder. – A trio of small-business owners in Detroit is creating a citywide currency called Detroit Cheers, $3 denomination bills. They’ve gotten the cooperation of more than a dozen city merchants to agree to accept Detroit Cheers as real money. Apparently, Detroit’s not the only one reviving the tradition of thousands of communities creating local currencies to spark hometown commerce. The Detroit News reports that the Detroit Cheers program is just one of 75 local currency systems that have sprung up recently in the U.S. Legal scholars say this is all legit, since the made-up bills don’t resemble federally issued money. People typically exchange federal dollars with the “local currency” at local banks, use that money to spend at local businesses, which then convert that money to real dollars at the bank. So far, the businesses that are participating in the Detroit Cheers program include a building and furniture design firm, a dog day-care center, a graphics designer, a carpenter, a nonprofit and several restaurants and bars. In nearby Traverse City, Mich., its local currency program is in its fourth year, currently bringing a total of $13,000 worth of currency circulating in the community. In another part of the country, BerkShares currency in the Berkshires area in southern Massachusetts has nearly $2 million worth of local currency since its inception three years ago. -End - Do you know of other examples where we are helping each other locally in business - taking responsibility for ourselves and our communities? Please share with all of us. Quote: “With no purpose, there’s no drive. With no big benefits to go after OR no pain to avoid, there’s not motivation.” Mike Brescia. Think about the following questions for a minute – do none of these apply to you??? What’s your purpose for living today, tomorrow, next year, in 10 years? If you have no goals, no desires, no passion for living, there’s no drive to do anything today or tomorrow because there is no results, no reward, no satisfaction, no purpose to do anything? You’ll just wander in the wilderness – unfocused, emotionless, no happiness…nothing but emptiness. What Big Benefits do you want for yourself and others? If there are no benefits you desire or they are nothing more than watching TV as a couch potatoe, or to have a beer or ? – you won’t feel a purpose to live, or feel a drive or motivation to do anything. Your mind, emotions, desires are basically dead, listless. What pain are you trying to avoid or lessen? Mental pain, emotional pain, physical pain, pain of loneliness, pain of feeling worthless, unfulfilled, unhappy? Until you have some pain that really hurts, you won’t do anything to get rid of it. You won’t be motivated. Even the homeless, the destitute and hungry have wants and desires, or they have pain they want to avoid. They desire a purpose for living. -- Homeless surely want to have a shelter to protect them from the cold, extreme heat, rain, wind. -- Hungry people surely want to relieve their hunger with food on a regular basis. It’s a given that at least one of the above questions applies to everyone. Recommendation Know your purpose – your “Big Why”. Ask yourself the questions above and write your answers. Your WHY will motivate you – assist you to take action to get what you want and desire. If you want to live life with purpose, get big benefits from living, or avoid physical, mental or emotional pain – you must take charge of your life - take responsibility for getting those results. Sound like a silly question? Whatever you visualize likely determines your life, your experiences and results in the next moment, the next day, in your future. People have ideas, pictures in their mind a lot. We anticipate, imagine, welcome, see, enjoy, fear a scene or upcoming situation… that’s just human nature. It’s an automatic thing people do throughout the day. Lets look at the significance of visualizing. Our brain, our thoughts are always working, imagining, predicting and projecting what we think, feel, or believe will happen. We feel, see, hear, taste, smell all the time. Without even realizing it, we imagine, we visualize what is going to happen next…. next….. next. That’s good and it also is not good sometimes. Why? Because we tend to imagine, visualize based on perceptions, conditioning from childhood, previous situations and their results. People visualize these scenarios often We visualize ourselves as less than we are, less than we are capable of being…. - Less talented - Prone to mess up again - Not lucky so things will be less than we want - Not strong enough to pass up that juicy hamburger - Lacking in skills - Less worthy than others What we visualize and imagine tends to come true, because we take actions that manifest these “less than desired” or ‘loser-type’ visualizations we imagine. Choose a new path - visualize a positive outcome always Imagine what will happen when we visualize ourselves as having the best, being the best, doing the best, and anticipating the best for ourselves and those we love. - I have so much experience in _______________, this task will be easy - Things will work out so well today and everyday. - I have skills and talent to do well, to be successful. - I can do anything I choose to do. - I deserve the best and will do whatever is necessary to achieve that . - I am as good as anyone. - Today is another wonderful day of successes and good things. - I feel like a winner and am a winner. Take actions to manifest positive outcomes and success in all you do Our emotions are always there, so let’s use them to our advantage, See it, hear it, feel it, taste it and smell it. Isn’t that more fun? Your new energy and enthusiasm will motivate you to take the action to achieve what you desire. See your life and results change right in front of your eyes. Do you want to experience more happiness and success? And feel greater joy and purpose in your personal life and in your business or career? Believe in yourself because it is the foundation, the source, the beginning of happiness and success for you. Increasing belief in yourself is the stairway that will assist you to rise up as high as you wish to go. This is a joyous journey of feeling better about yourself every day and many times each day. Practice some or all of these ‘belief builders’ every day: Know and accept yourself for who you are and what you are today. Recognize and acknowledge how unique and special you are. Know that you don’t have to be perfect. Know and understand your strengths. Focus on today and who you are and what you are today. Forget yesterday and the past. Don’t allow negativity to enter your thoughts. Recognize and celebrate your small victories of every day. Remind yourself of who you are becoming, not of who you were. Take a stand for yourself – speak your truth, your thoughts and ideas out loud to others. Don’t worry about other people’s opinions of you. It’s your opinion about yourself that is important. Stop thinking that other people’s opinions are important and rely and use your own. As you manifest these actions on a daily basis, be vividly aware of how good you feel, how free you feel, how much more you believe in yourself, and the progress you are making in your life, career and business. Once you experience the results, this is one habit you will ALWAYS practice, I guarantee it. Grow your Belief in yourself. Enjoy and celebrate You everyday. Business Success doesn’t just happen. It begins with a person who has a thought or an idea… I need to stop right there……..There is a lot more however the person has to be special if the business is to succeed and make their life and the world a better place.
A special internal mindset of certain internal core beliefs, values and principles is important before anything else… Or a person must be willing to learn and develop this mindset quickly. Without this business success mindset, much or all of the effort and actions will be in vain… or perhaps yield a limited result with undue stress, anxiety, worry, and results
Personal integrity is the core value we'll focus on today. The business owner or owners must have personal integrity that they cultivate into their business, customers and clients and others.
I have given much thought to this serious and vital core value of personal integrity, did much research, reviewed my experiences as a business owner myself and of the hundreds of clients I’ve worked with over the years. What I came up with is a book of knowledge and wisdom. Oops, how do I condense this into short, clear and useable information?
I’ve found excellent personal integrity wisdom for you that includes a suggested personal code of conduct as well as the benefits of operating with integrity. Please read “Operating with the Truth” (personal Integrity) from Tips for Success.org.
I already discussed the mindset principle of “Believe in Yourself” attitude earlier this month…. and there are more coming. >br>

Here’s what I learned from my experience this week. Hopefully my story and tips will help you become more aware and more astute in protecting yourself from unauthorized charges to your credit card or checking accounts from the internet. Nearly $600 hit my business checking account as an ‘immediate transfer charge’ from internet Merchant Account, i.e., Paypal. It could be one of many internet services where we have an account. I received letter from bank saying I need to add cash to my checking account to cover that transfer charge, which was denied because of insufficient funds in my account. I knew I did not purchase anything that large recently. I contacted the Merchant Account and they had already put a ‘hold’ on my account as they recognized this as an unusual charge. The hold would prevent additional transactions to the account in the future. (Don’t assume that all merchant account companies will do this, because they don’t.) But the existing unauthorized fraudulent transaction would be presented again to my checking account until a letter of denial was received from my bank or there was sufficient funds in the account again. Wow, that’s dangerous because I fund that account when I pay my monthly bills! So at some point, there could be cash enough to cover the charges! I was lucky this time because my account had minimal balance right now. The error correction process is circular making it difficult to make changes, reverse errors, and protect your cash. Technology is not as flexible as a real person. Six Tips to Protect Yourself From Fraudulent Online Purchases This is general information, and is not intended to be a comprehensive list. But these tips will give you a good head start on staving off fraudulent online purchases. Tip 1: Only buy goods from secure websites you know and trust. Secure website addresses start with https and may use a security system such as Verified by Visa or MasterCard SecureCode security for online payments. Tip 2: Credit cards are by far the safest way to pay online, according to the National Consumers League. That's because your liability is limited to $50 under the Fair Credit Billing Act. Many credit-card companies have $0 liability policies. This means you won't be held accountable for any fraudulent purchases. However, read the fine print. MasterCard has zero liability policy good only for U.S. issued cards. And you are limited to one purchase in last 12 months, plus your account must be in good standing. Tip 3: Look for time limits on filing a claim. Some companies require a claim must be filed within 30 days of the fraud. Tip 4: Never click on links or attachments in emails unless you are 100% sure that the email is legitimate. Protect yourself by always typing in the address of your bank or online shopping site yourself, rather than by following links. Tip 5: Debit card payments have limitations. Your liability limit under federal law increases the longer you wait to report any unauthorized activity. If you report it within two days, your liability is capped at $50. Wait longer than two days, though, and it skyrockets to $500. And if you don't report the unauthorized debit transaction within 60 days, you could be liable for the full amount -- even if it exceeds $500, says the Federal Trade Commission Tip 6: Review the charges to your bank and credit card accounts regularly, at least weekly. I’ve always done this and have caught several errors. These days I think this kind of review is more important than ever before. Have a happy day and keep your cash safe. I am so passionate about this principle of authenticity. I want to share my energy and passionate feelings with you,. Hopefuly your energy and mine together allow us to make the ultimate high level commitment to be authentic in everything we do, feel, say, and more. Why? For some time (decades) too much of society has been attracted to, promoting and manifesting more and more of the fake, the facades, the unreal, the over-extended, over enhanced……….. We’ve been building an unreal mindset, which has no gravity, no sticking power…we’ve been promoting the ultimate, the ideal, the impossible of everything………. We have compromised reality, common sense, the authentic, the genuine, and diminished our values and our principles. I don’t know about you, but I hated that game. It always was based on winners and losers, proclaimed but not authentic winners and those who held winner’s positions, as they defined them. The others (the majority) are thought of, treated and portrayed as less or lacking or ‘the loser’ group. Don’t get me wrong, competition is good, but this isn’t that at all. Many times the winners were those that overstated, over-emphasized ++++………. The authentic, the honest, the truthful people were considered naïve, “not qualified’, and other negative terms. I saw those ‘less than’ strategies affect other people and it affected me too because it was constant, consistent efforts and tactics to minimize us. In my situations, I don’t know if I would have achieved my dreams, as I envisioned at that time. However the tactics used to make sure I wasn’t even considered were sickening, disheartening and just plain wrong +++. The games played were/are mean, dirty, ugly. But…. over time the authentic, the genuine sprouts its little head and will emerge into an unstoppable strength. I believe it is at that sprouting stage now. You’ll see it build strong roots, grow to momentum and then a phenomenon. Each of us can be part of that phenomenon that will lead us to a state of greater joy, success, happiness, peace, fulfillment and wealth. The good will prevail. Society has learned lessons and desires a change. Authenticity is coming back: Be inspired by the current news quotes: *************************************** April 20th, 2009 “Her story’s like ‘a Disney movie’” | USA Today If you have not yet seen Susan Boyle on Britains Got Talent, check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY&feature=rec-HM-fresh+div and then see why Entertainment Weekly editor Ken Tucker says “People want their idols to be authentic.” ************************************* April 18th, 2009 “Goodbye Bland Affluence” | The Wall Street Journal Columnist Peggy Noonan predicts the future: get ready for “authenticity chic”. ************************************** April 6th, 2009 “Warm and Fuzzy Makes a Comeback” | The New York Times Marketers are turning to more authentic ways of garnering attention, with techniques incorporating such elements as “retro”, “throwback”, and “vintage”. Authenticity is a business success mindset necessary to manifest principles and values to achieve business success. Come back to see Part 2 of Business Success Mindset– Authenticity Principle. What is authenticity? It’s being real, genuine, legitimate and truthful. Authenticity gives us a warm and fuzzy feeling of comfort, trust, credibility. I think Leland R. Beaumont offers a complete, understandable description of the ‘authentic self’: “The true you; aligned and congruent self image, stature, values, beliefs, goals, behavior, word, and public image.” Why do we value the principle of authenticity? Authenticity builds an emotional connection between people as well as things like businesses, brands and almost everything. Where does authenticity come from? 1. Authenticity comes from a place we can connect with," a place with a real story of a purpose-driven life, that touches us and that we always remember.” Captain Chelsey Sullenberger (Sully), the pilot of the US Airways Flight 1549 that crashed into the Hudson River without any major injuries or fatalities is an excellent example of authenticity story. 2. Authenticity emerges from "people with a deep passion for what they are doing.” Ellie and Charlie are examples of this. Their passion and energy comes from deep down in their souls. 3. Authenticity is a person or thing that is what it says it is. The story the person tells through their actions aligns with the story they tell through their words, their body language and all other nonverbal communication. The recent Miss USA Pageant runner-up, Miss California, Carrie Prejean, exhibited authenticity with her genuine response to a pageant question. Her response kept her beliefs and convictions aligned with the words she spoke. She demonstrated genuine truthfulness and credibility. The examples above are some outstanding ones, the unusual ones, to illustrate and clarify a point. All of us can be and can manifest authenticity of our real self the way we naturally are. Each of us is unique in our own way and authentic in that way. Let’s look at what we have to do to become authentic. How can we become more authentic? 1. Believe in everything you say and do. 2. Always speak the truth and act in accordance with your moral compass at all times to all people: to your friends, your colleagues, to the public and to your customers. No hyped "pitching." No hyped "selling." No little white lies. No fear of what others will think of you, your brand or your company. No acting in a way that you think others will like you more. Just complete and total honesty showing your genuine, unique, and passionate self. Nothing more. That’s the most powerful selling you can do. 3. We make the decision to be authentic or not. Authenticity is required but it cannot be compelled onto us. No one can be genuine and real when forced into it. For more in-depth discussion and clarification, refer to “ Authentic Self”. Personal and Business Success Mindset Requires that we be Authentic That is a fact. We have no choice if we want success. It is up to us to make that decision to believe, to be and to act in truth, with authenticity. I’ve been focusing on attributes of Business Success Mindset recently and there will be more. However, here is a pause to share some food for thought on the concept of mindset (business or personal). Hope these thoughts are refreshing and enlightening in some way for you. ***************************** “Your thoughts only tell you what you want, but your actions tell you what you get.” -- Troy Fontana ***************************** “There are two primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them.” – Denis Waitley ***************************** Another attitude mindset (on a not-so-good day, an amusing thought) “A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.” – Herm Albright Have a happy and productive day. Reading this book found on the shelf at son’s home: Moral Intelligence – Enhancing Business Performance & Leadership Success By Doug Lennick & Fred Kiel Attracted my attention because (my personal opinion) it seems there is great lack of a moral code (what’s right morally) in business, in personal life, in governments and in the world. Anything goes because words can be muddled and tumbled around to give appearance of something good. quick and many actions, all heaped together on top of each other for appearance …. These techniques fake us out, confuse our intuition, our emotions. Short term progress and results are desirable to build hope and confidence. But most important is long-lived success, prosperity, and happiness... which comes from doing what's right as the foundation, + commitment to 'never give up' + a few more things. May today bring you one-step closer to happiness, success and wealth for yourself. Time management system and process that is easy, simple, efficient and effective is what I want. I bet you do too. Let’s begin. Prepare for Each Day: Prioritize the tasks you MUST DO on a written list. What’s on the list you won’t have to remember. Free up your mind from these details. Develop a list of specific tasks like 1. Call Jane RE ebook; 2. post new blog. 3……… Be realistic in developing the list, and make it easy to follow. Accomplishing many things does not mean we have been productive….. maybe it just means that we have been busy. Let’s be less busy and more productive by using a prepared list to remain focused. Break down work time for the tasks into 15 Minute Segments Deliberately focus your attention in 15 minute time increments for many tasks. Some tasks that can be accomplished in 15 minutes: - Declutter and organize your workspace, desk and materials you will need during this day. - Read and respond to emails – but only do this a couple times each day, not every 30 minutes. - Return phone calls. - Respond to a couple forums or discussions on BraveHeart Women website, your Community site. - Welcome and invite members to join you as a friend and/or to join your Community. - Post one or two articles to blog and other sites (assumes you prepared everything you need to post when writing the blog post) - Do something fun and relaxing to break up your workday: listen to music, play with your pet, take a short walk - Read a few pages in a book on personal development or topic of interest to you. - Research on the web for info, ideas – Google Search, etc. - Develop list of keywords to research. - Break down a larger project into smaller chunks that can be accomplished in sequence in 15-minute time segments (or 30 minutes). Celebrate Celebrate your time management success. Be grateful for what you have accomplished in these short time periods today. Allow these successes to energize and inspire to accomplish more. Repeat the process every day to form a habit.
