Personal growth is learning to becoming more self reliant - having the ability to access your power within, and to make the decisions that are right for you - based on what you want.

At the end of the day the person who knows you best, and who understands you best is you. It is, and never will be anybody else. The more you rely on somebody else to dictate what you should do, the more you look to the outside – the less in control of your life you will be.

A woman sooner or later discovers that she is the master-gardener of her soul, the director of her life.

So how do you become self reliant?

You can do so by participating in a great community like BraveHeart Women; by reading books, by attending seminars and taking classes, by working with a coach or mentor, by masterminding with other like minded people and so on...

However, you must realize that in order to become this authentic, self expressed, capable decisive being who is leading herself - you are the one who does the work on you.

A good coach or mentor will assist you by guiding you through the tough questions, the processes, and strategies that will be of benefit for you. But you are the one who ultimately must apply the strategies, and take the steps towards change. In this way, you will develop your own best thinking and increase your level of awareness, consciousness, and intuition.

And so let me leave you with this simple question - What do you really want? Know that you have the power within ( perhaps it is currently dormant - but you do have it) to Be, Do and Have what you want.

The first two business weeks of 2009 are almost done and here in Central Canada, the morning has started with a fresh -31 degrees Celsius - sparkling snow and a stillness that held incredible beauty in the first few hours of the day...

How you choose to begin your day will actually set the tone for the hours that follow...How do you choose to start your morning?

One of my favorite writers - Philip Humbert http://www.philiphumbert.com/ reminded me this morning of the following:

In order to make 2009 a Fine year, I will want to collect approximately 365 great days, and most days begin in the morning. So it follows that in order for me to have a great year, I must commit to having a good start to my morning.

Perhaps you choose to start the day with some exercise, perhaps you pray or meditate, maybe you write in your journal - whatever way you choose to start your day - make sure that it is right for you!

Give some thought to what gets you going and feeling good first thing in the morning, and do whatever you need to do, to ensure that you can execute your plan. This will enhance your self empowerment.

Once again the Holiday Season has come and gone and January, the first month of this brand new year 2009 is almost gone too.

Are you moving towards the intentions you set out a month ago? Many folks are feeling blue and some are feeling down right depressed because the Christmas hype did not live up to their expectations. The higher the phony build up for folks at that time of year, the further down they come afterwards.

Too many people are led to believe that the Holiday Season is the only time of year to celebrate life rather then focusing on the amazing possibilities of each and every day and therefore the importance to set their intentions accordingly.

This is much in part, due to popular media. Society quickly gets caught up in the hype of shopping, over spending, baking, over eating, and sleepless nights so that when day-to-day reality hits - it hits hard.

People frequently start the New Year in debt, and feeling too heavy and lethargic, rather than feeling energized, rejoicing and ready to embark on the 12 new months that lie ahead.

Also, this is when many well-intentioned individuals choose to make quick and not necessarily thought out, resolutions. These generally fall into the category of improving their health and habits.

Studies clearly show that the majority of resolutions are broken within the first few days and certainly within the first month or two. A sure sign of this are the gym memberships that increase in January and the packed facilities, yet come February and March numbers go way down.

Not everyone falls prey to this quick fix mentality and the need to make drastic changes. Many inspired individuals choose December as a time to reflect upon their year in a more holistic manner and reset their life course by fine tuning their habits and making minor adjustments.

Minor adjustments when consistently applied can bring about major changes. These people choose to come from a place of Intention rather than Resolutions.

A resolution would sound like: I will quit smoking. I will lose 10 pounds. An intention would sound like: I intend to breathe more easily. My clothes will fit better.

We have all seen planes that are flying in the sky. 97% of the time they are off course and yet, they are headed in the right direction. With minor adjustments they land at their desired destination. Pilots know that there is no need to beat themselves up internally for being off course, they just need to keep their mind and intent focused on their destination, make consistent minor changes and voilà the end result - we arrive safely, in good time and where we want to (assuming mother nature didn't have other plans).

There is a fabulous book on the topic of Intentions, written by Dr. Wayne Dyer - The Power of Intention - a most worthwhile read.

Those who come from a place of Intention reflect and decide what kind of person they want to BE, in order to do what they want to DO, to eventually achieve what they want to HAVE.

Who we currently are is mostly composed of whom we have spent our time with, what we have spent our time doing, what we have read, what we have watched on TV and what we believe. But who we can be, that's a matter of imagination, desire, and commitment.

Individuals coming from a place of Intention frequently make a conscious effort to improve their interactions with others in order to develop more harmonious relationships. They take the time to decide what they will learn in the months to come and challenge themselves to GROW. They seek out role models and mentors (people or books) - those that have been where they want to go so that they can learn faster and more efficiently. They look for new opportunities and are willing to step out of their comfort zone and simply DO. These individuals determine for themselves what they are strongly committed to that will in turn determine where they will contribute and focus their time, talent or finances.

People who operate from a place of Intention are not better than anyone else - they simply have created an overall plan, one that incorporates the emotional, physical, spiritual and financial components, and choose to consciously execute their plan.

They have learned that because we are holistic beings, knowing what you stand for and where you are going always facilitates any decision making - because the options in front of you either support your chosen path or they do not support you. Results then flow from your choices.

As time goes by, you can make minor adjustments when you get temporarily off course. Reality is that we all get off course. It is not a problem unless we fail to recognize it or that we fail to get back on course.

By now, some of you might be thinking:
It is just too hard to change.
What is the use of trying?
I have tried before and it didn't work.

Doing guilt and regret will only continue to hold you back. If contemplating and planning in regards to what you would like to BE, DO and Have is new to you, start with small steps and celebrate each of your accomplishments. Personal growth and transformation takes time and persistence.

Remember small things done consistently, over time will yield big changes. Recently it was pointed out to me that we tend to overestimate what we can do in a year, and completely underestimate what we can do in 5 years. Therefore at the end of a year we often get discouraged because we did not accomplish everything we wanted to. We feel we need to revamp everything, start over or give up, because it supposedly has not worked. Yet, we may have made significant progress in one or more areas. What we need to do is build upon our accomplishments and continue onwards and upwards. Studies have also shown that 99% of the people give up on their goal when they have done 99% of the hardest work. Isn't that a sad fact!

In summary, here are a few ideas to help you get February -started well and increase your personal empowerment.

1. Take some quiet time and reflect upon this past month. Some possible starting points would be:
What went well?
What did I accomplish?
What am I grateful for?
What would I like to improve about my situation?

2. Decide on one thing that you intend to BE more of, and one or more habits you intend to implement. Write out your plan and keep it simple so that you stick to it. Keep track of your progress by keeping a journal and keep yourself accountable. Be in Joy, and celebrate all your manifested intentions, big or small.

Hello everyone,

For those of you who were able to join the First BraveHeart Community party this evening - it was wonderful meeting and connecting with you!

I am sure you will agree this is a wonderful space to learn and grow together, and become what we each have dreamed of.

Ellie Drake has created something of great value that we can now use to empower ourselves and others.

If per chance you missed this get together - you will definitely want to be a part of the next one. It was the perfect opportunity to meet new friends and feel what is possible as we all come together.

The authenticity, genuineness and safe haven that has been created is something to cherish and nurture.

WOW! I have just finished listening to the inspiring interview with Ellie and Lisa Nichols - there are so many nuggets shared - something for everyone.

Lisa does a fabulous job of sharing her concept of a "No matter what attitude" and so openly gives examples from her own life experience.

Two great questions that Lisa offers to us are:

What price am I willing to pay for my dreams?
How can I be used in a bigger and better way?

I could go on and on, however I feel I cannot do justice to this interview in this short blog - you must give yourself the gift of personally listening to the interview.

I so enjoyed the dialogue between Ellie and Leeza Gibbons. Perhaps it was because it reminded me on some level, of my own mother who passed away suddenly, at the age of 69.

I have always felt that my mother was in many ways, a misunderstood woman, a woman who had her own song but left it aside to attend to others. In my mind, she died with her music in her.

One of the lessons learned from my mother's passing and upon further reflection on her life, was the importance of honoring one self and going for what is important to you.

In order to honor oneself, and move towards what you desire it may take uncomfortable steps. Furthermore, it requires a healthy self esteem, self confidence and an understanding of who we really are. And all of that is something that is cultivated here in this BraveHeart Community.

Leeza leaves us with a great question: "What is your song?"

And I would add to that - "Are you willing to sing it?"

Do not die with your music in you!

Last March, as I was walking around Rome, Italy, evidence of the Renaissance surrounded me while I was observing the architecture and the art. I wondered how that related to my present and my future?

This is what came up for me: art and beauty are everlasting. Quality is a value that lasts. There is truth in beauty and beauty in truth.

Despite what is happening in the world economy, truth and beauty will still rise to the top and are currently/will be still appreciated by many.

The collapse of the North American economy is about bringing us back to lasting values and learning to rediscover ourselves - our own greatness.

The collapse of the system as we know it, will in my mind bring us to the end of a dark age - an economical and spiritual dark age.

There will be a new Renaissance. In fact it has already started in the personal development industry. Folks are choosing to design their life rather than living it by default. They are recognizing their potential and choosing to maximize their abilities. In fact it is time to create your future or be created by it. Your future is in your hands - whether you are comfortable with that thought or not.

In order to help yourself create your future: you can choose to respect various cultures and cultural differences. Live for new beginnings. And we certainy have a wealth of opportunity to that here with BraveHeart Women Community.

Insist on the possibilities for yourself and others -a raising of the bar versus accepting continuous lowering of the standards.

Innovation will actually be the cure for the 21st century. It is time to discover your voice and to create. In the 21st century creativity will be a highly valuable skill to possess.

So go forward - be bold - choose to elevate yourself. Find support by being part of a community of folks that are like minded. Choose to mastermind.

Everyone has a voice that needs to be discovered. Have you discovered yours yet?

In my travels, I was once again reminded that we each have a voice and a unique message to deliver to the world. We each have a story that someone else is waiting to hear - that only we can say in our own unique way. Now your message may be delivered in a variety of ways - art, music, a song you sing, a book, an article, a blog, a speech, a sport you play, and so on.

I know some of you are thinking - I have no message. No one would want to hear or see what I have to express, or better yet my message is not that important. Wrong!

You have a greatness within you - don't let yourself be stopped by your limited thinking. However in order to become more, you need to see yourself as more. You need to understand and wrap your head around the fact that there is more in you than you can ever imagine.

Actually the great folks we hear about, who achieve in every field are not the exception, but rather they are the example. You have greatness in you - it may just be dormant at the moment.

You do not have to be great to start, but you need to start to be great.

The problem is not that we aim too high and miss - the problem is that we aim too low and hit. You actually owe it to the world to discover your voice, and share your message. How you will choose to express your voice is completely up to you.

Personally I have made the commitment to discover my voice at a deeper level - to be a messenger of hope, to help stop the negative thoughts others may have about themselves. My message is all about promoting the human potential. And I know that I am far from having reached my potential - but I am most certainly on my way!

Your human potential is something that is worth fighting for every day.

Last March, while visiting the Colosseum in Rome, I was reminded of the gladiators who fought for their lives. You might be wondering how that fits here?

While the gladiators fought for their lives and the opportunity to live just a little big longer, we are not in that kind of situation; yet, are we standing up for our potential or accepting to follow the masses and stand in mediocrity?

If you are an individual suffering from success anorexia - here are three steps you can take to start reversing this limiting condition.

#1. Identify someone who can love and support you unconditionally. While this may sound too touchy feely to some of you, reality is we all need the unconditional support, and encouragement of someone to become all that we can be.

#2. Become willing to succeed. Few people realize that what we want is also what we fear. No matter how many "How to books of success..." you read, or seminars you attend, if you're subconsciously afraid of success, you will not be letting yourself succeed. You will find ways to self sabotage.

So how do you overcome your fear of success?

You know how some people, when they have a difficult decision to make, write down the pros and cons for the decision and proceed from there; well do the same here - sit down with your vision of success, and write down the pros and cons. You might be wondering what are the drawbacks of success.

Perhaps you are subconsciously worried that you may have to face your fear of the unfamiliar. Perhaps you will have to deal with the folks you currently hang around with, being jealous of you or no longer wanting to be with you. What if people expect you to do and be more than you think you can? Get the drawbacks and benefits to success down on paper. You can finally face, and start overcoming your subconscious/conscious fears.

#3. Establish Personal Time. Set a time and place where the focus is You. This is vital. Too many people are overwhelmed by their To do list. Setting time aside just for you, is the only way you can learn that the world won't end if you take time for yourself. This can one of the hardest steps for people to take, because of the guilt you may feel when you do something for You.

We are victims of circumstances which we created. I learned that by stopping myself from success- not only was I not helping others but that I was actually hurting those I love.

I have come to realize that successful people see failures - disappointments in a positive light, and believe they have what it takes to get over it. They choose to look for the lesson learned, and what value they can take from their setback, rather than focusing on the failure.

If you are a sports fan, you may have actually witnessed the loss of a tournament, a series or a particular game, and seen fans who appeared more upset than the athletes. That is because the athlete knows he or she can, and will get over it. Before long, they are focusing on the next event. Whereas the devoted sports fan gets very discouraged, and frequently takes the loss harder. If you do not believe me go to a teenager's hockey or ball game, and observe the parents.

The difference between successful people and those who are not, is frequently due to the perceptions that they hold. People who experience setbacks or what they refer to as failures frequently take the setback personally. They believe it defines them. They let it lower their self confidence and self esteem. However successful people will share with you that the reason they succeed more is because they have usually failed more times. They are simply more persistent.

Next time you experience a setback try re-framing the concept of failure in your mind, as simply one of a temporary setback or temporary defeat. Many of life's failures are simply folks who did not realize how close they were to success whey they gave up.

You may want to redefine the term success. Success is not only the end result. Start giving yourself credit for all the steps you are taking along the way. Praise your attempts and the learning you are doing. The learning if applied holds great value!

Setbacks are a natural part of the process in any new endeavor. You will attempt many things in your new venture. Some will work, some will need tweaking, and some will need to be ditched. If you are not willing to make errors and move to higher levels of achievement, then you are really not ready to learn and to grow.

With the rate of change accelerating continuously, it is essential to committing to being a life-long learner. When you embrace the process of learning, growing and becoming more, life takes on a richly rewarding and satisfying quality. Fulfillment is possible.

You hold the power in your mind. Let go of what others may think! Choose to redefine Success and "Failure".

I have learned that success really depends on the set of mental and physical habits each woman chooses to build and implement.

Successful women always get clear on their desired results and then choose to develop and build, mental and physical habits that will help them reach their goals. They were not born with an extra dose of these productive habits, they simply chose to cultivate and grow them.

The ladies who get what they want out of life have chosen to get out of their comfort zone. One reason many individuals don't get what they want out life, is that they have simply chosen to remain in their comfort zone. They may have read a personal development book or two, or even attended a seminar - however they have not followed that up with right thinking and inspired action.

The longer we all wait between hearing and taking action - the less chance of us ever taking action. We all have enormous potential - for some, it may simply be lying dormant. Unfortunately we lose what we do not use.

Remember success can only be defined by you, what is important to you!

Successful women have learned that as they take mental and physical action, doors start to open and then more doors open. They connect with the resources, the individuals, the opportunities they require to achieve their desired life.

If you are wanting to live your life large - go ahead take that first step. Start checking out what are some of the possibilities for you. Connect with other BraveHeart Women- mastermind - take inspired action!

Today, I treated myself well by listening to the dialogue between Ellie and Dr. Maya Angelou - that was a gift of self-love and a tool for personal growth.

The precious gems shared were numerous and worth every moment of my precious time spent.

I loved her definition of a woman - someone who takes responsibility for the time she takes and the space she occupies.

The sharing of how she was liberated by her mother... and her story of unconditional love was touching.

And then Dr. Angelou spoke of Courage as one of the most important virtues a woman can have. "Not angry, not impatient with the work you do – just hope and pray to be better - don’t need to be held tight to anybody else opinions."

The words "Give yourself the authority to be comfortable in your own skin." in my mind, are words we should always keep by our side and teach to our young daughters, nieces, sisters...

Maya's sharing on forgiveness was enough to send a shiver down one's spine - Forgiveness of self – forgiveness of the offender –

"Have to know that people only do what they know how to do. I can be changed by events that have happened to me but I refuse to be reduced."

There is so much more ... and I certainly cannot do it justice in a blog. I urge you to give yourself a wonderful gift of self-love by taking the time to listen and savor the words and wisdom of these two phenomenal women - Dr.Maya Angelou and Ellie Drake.

"If you do not know what you stand for, you will fall for everything."

Which vision is guiding you on a daily basis? A few blogs ago, I shared the importance of being the captain of your ship. And every captain must have a vision, a destination she is moving towards.

It's not enough to be busy, so are the ants. The question is, what are we busy about? - Henry Thoreau

A big part of life is simply showing up, showing up ready to be, do and have what you want. However, you must know what you truly desire.

If you haven't already crafted a vision for yourself, take the time to write out, draw, or even sing what you would like your life to look like in the next 90 days,180 days, the next year and so on.

In doesn't have to be perfect... just get started. Decide what you want to move towards. A powerful vision will help pull you forward and keep you internally motivated to do what needs to be done, in order to achieve your intentions, goals, and desires.

I found when I had no vision, human nature being what it is... I found myself staying in my comfort zone and not moving forward.

Later, I was reminded that when the captain is guiding the ship, even though she cannot see the destination for most of the journey, she can however visualize it, feel it, and sense the arrival. It does not matter that she does not yet see the destination, because she has a quiet, confident knowing, that if she keeps going forward she will get there.The captain of the ship knows who she is and the role she plays in her vision.

Just like the captain you must know who you are and what is the role that you are playing in your life.

I for one know that I am someone with a message and a method - a message that each one of us has incredible potential, talents, and gifts, - more potential than we are even aware of... and a method to develop that potential, and achieve one's desired level of freedom, satisfaction, fulfillment and joy.

If you forget who you are as you go through your life or choose not to connect with your inner self - you will end up losing sight of your vision during the storms.

Know that you have everything you need within to move without with your vision. See yourself in relationship with your vision - and know that you will continuously adjust it as you achieve mini intentions along the way.

What would you dare to start if you knew you could not fail?

Relaxed confidence is a trait that I have always admired in others - and I have come to understand it better. Relaxed confidence can be different for different individuals.

"Whatever we expect with confidence becomes our own self-fulfilling prophecy." Brian Tracy:

It is knowing what is going on in the world (in general terms), knowing where you have been, and where you are going.

Part of the problem for many women, who are struggling, is that they see themselves as victims, rather than as part of the solution.

Women frequently struggle because they do not realize the power they have within, and how they can bring about change for themselves.

When you feel and know that you have a certain control - control defined as the ability to choose your thoughts, words, deeds, actions, and how you show up in the world - then you start to feel confident. Struggle increases in one's life when you feel you cannot do something about the situation or that you have no control.

As you develop your awareness of the power you hold within you will become more relaxed and confident.

Relaxed confidence comes in part from choosing to be a part of a community - a group such as BraveHeart Women - a supportive and encouraging environment - a resource for growth and transformation.

We must choose carefully who we associate with as it affects all areas of our life.

As you become more confident and aware of your greatness, you may feel it is part of your responsibility to understand others more fully, and in turn hold the space for their greatness.
