I think that everyone loves a story about a hero even an unlikely hero. This is a tale about a Portuguese water dog (yes the same breed that the Obama kids have)

A 2-year-old Portuguese water dog named Cabrillo was honored today by the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department for alerting his owner to a fire at 3:15 a.m. on April 2.

Cabrillo, sensing danger, started barking incessantly. When his owner got out of bed he saw that his neighbor's house was on fire. The owner immediately called 911 and firefighters were able to put out the fire quickly.

For his heroism, Cabrillo was named an honorary Fire Dog and given a box of treats.

The award was made by Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Earle and the crew that responded to the call.

Tom and Allie Harvey, owners of the Safari Zoological Park — a private zoo in Caney, Kansas are dedicated to helping save endangered species, and the pair have owned several types of rare tigers.

Tom Harvey hopes that by promoting his unique story and inviting people to visit his zoo, he can raise more awareness for tigers and highlight the need to help endangered species.

Dogs and cats don’t always see paw to paw, but in an amazing story of animal kindness, one golden retriever named Isabella adopted three white tiger cubs that were abandoned by their mother.

The Harveys— own the cubs who found a mother in Isabella — described as the “sweetest most gentle Golden Retriever” by her owners — has been nursing the baby tiger cubs ever since their mother rejected them just 24 hours after giving birth. Now 7 weeks old, the cubs named Anjika, Nagira and Siddhani are healthy, strong and have just finished weaning.

This is more than just a tale of animal survival — it’s also a story of perseverance and faith for the Harveys. In a turn of events the couple describe as a “miracle,” the Harveys’ zoo was in danger of being shut down after rising gas prices hurt attendance. They made a painful decision that if nothing saved them by August 1, they would be forced to shut down operations.

Isabella had an unexpected pregnancy and had just finished weaning her two puppies. Then, on July 28, a day after Isabella turned one, the dog accepted the tiger cubs. And on July 31, as Tom and Allie braved for the worst, they got a call from TODAY. The very next day, they were in New York ... and back in business after the national attention boosted zoo attendance numbers.

This is video footage of Suryia the orangutan and Roscoe the dog who became best friends upon meeting each other. Both Suryia and (now) Roscoe live at The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species in Myrtle Beach, SC. This story will be featured this fall on National Geographic Channel's show "Odd Couples" and later this month on "Oprah".

In Brisbane, Australia, apparently the answer is three!

Earlier this month, a trio of industrious birds Down Under figured out how to operate a water fountain by observing humans and then making their move when the coast was clear.

The feathered friends reportedly spent 10 minutes bathing and sipping from the fountain, taking turns pushing the lever for each other until all were quenched.

Better think thrice before calling anyone a birdbrain now?

A good motto to follow:

If there is a will there is a way

Here's to teamwork!

Today our BraveHeart sister, Hedy, sent me this amazing story via email. It is so special that I wanted to share it with all of you.

A female humpback whale had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines.

She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat.

She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth.

A fisherman spotted her just east of the Faralon Islands(outside the Golden Gate) and radioed for help.

Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her -- a very dangerous proposition. One slap of
the tail could kill a rescuer.

They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her.

When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles.

She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, nudged them, and pushed gently, thanking them.

Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives.

The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth says her eye was following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.

May you, and all those you love, be so fortunate...To be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you. And, may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude.

I pass this on to all of my BraveHeart sisters, in the same spirit.

When I asked my daughter how her act of kindness made her feel...her reply to me was ... "I can't stop smiling"

This is a story about my amazing daughter and BraveHeart Woman, Alex.

For the last month she has been upset over the fact that a friend of hers lost all of his possessions and suddenly he and his dog were homeless as a result of a house fire. Unfortunately he doesn't have any family members to assist him.

She had been trying to come up with ways to raise some money to help him out but due to her heavy work schedule, the lack of time was a factor keeping her from getting a fund raiser together.

Last week she had an unexpected income that landed at her doorstep. Like for many others, this extra cash would have come in handy, instead she decided her friend could use the money to find a place to live and get back on his feet.

Today she invited him to lunch and presented him with her heartfelt gift. Because of this gesture he and his dog will be in a warm home celebrating Christmas together.

I could feel the radiance of her beautiful smile as she was telling me her story over the phone.

Right now I am deeply grateful to be Alex's Mom

with love,
