What Happens When Pet Parents Fail to Plan?

As a positive pet obedience instructor, I was recently called to evaluate the temperament of a one-year-old German Shepherd puppy. He had never been to any socialization or obedience classes. I was told that he growled at people and jumped on them.

Lucky me. The puppy skipped the growl, lounged forward and nabbed the back of my thigh...even though the pet owner was "holding" onto the leash. I am now wearing a new tattoo.

What are the pet parent's options here? After further discussion, I found that the puppy had been raised in a barn...smells like "puppy mill." The breeder has not been in contact with the owner...doesn't care?

I advised the owner to seek out a trainer that rehabs dogs using positive reinforcement. The owner had already used a heavy hand and a choke collar for corrections on his own.

The second option would be to return the pup to the breeder.

My advice was not heeded. The owner instead opted to try for a "quick fix" with a "hang 'em up until they know who is boss" dog handler.

This poor pup will continue to lead an unhappy life all due to the lack of planning on the part of the humans involved.
