Summer is a Very Berry Good Time

Posted Jun 29, 2009 11:56 AM
Strawberry weekend! 120 lbs. of juicy, sweet red strawberries. That turned into 31 qts. of fresh freezer jam… and strawberry shortcake, scones, smoothies, and froze (? quarts – too many to count) for future smoothies, school lunch peanut butter-jelly sandwiches +…

Enjoyable to watch the teen-age grandsons, my son and his wife come for 1st, 2nd, and more of shortcake or toast with strawberry jam….. and hear the “MMmm Good! Brings back memories of my 3 sons growing up, swallowing up food into a never-filled ‘sink-hole’.

These boys are interested, which is even more precious. We take a bit of time for fun, sharing skills with younger generation and getting significant $$ savings compared to buying frozen or fresh fruit on store shelves… a win-win. Blueberries and raspberries are coming up soon…. Just found a blueberry farm, pick your own.

Do you have a favorite strawberry, blueberry, raspberry recipe you’d like to share?

Make this a b..ery good week for you!

Barbara,

I love the summertime because that's when all the berries are in full bloom.

I recently learn how to make blueberry crisp from Martha Stewart Living mag. It was delicious and it doesn't take all day to make.

If interested you can go on the internet to pull up the recipe or to Martha Stewart's website.

Hi Barbara,

I love to pick berries too. I frequent a 'pick your own' farm near my home. There is nothing like fresh blueberries and raspberries.

Most of them get eaten fresh but I do save some to freeze and enjoy them during the cold and blustery winter days.

Enjoy!

Linda B., I like your recipe.

Linda H., I'll have a very berry day couple more times this year.

Phoenix, let me know if your guys enjoy.

It is good to see people become inspired to adopt good habits: become more healthy; enjoy tasty, nutritious food; and use their money wisely... Notice how many people are having a garden, or growing some things like tomatoes. These are some of the good habits we develop during times like a recession that can benefit us the rest of our lives. All is good.

I will have all four of my grandsons here for the entire month of July. I think I'm going to look for a place to take them berry picking. Thanks so much for the wonderful idea. Peace and blessings.
