Time to Learn the Lesson, Commit to Change & Form a New, Better Habit

Posted Sep 3, 2009 11:31 AM
I’m learning and re-learning often a valuable lesson about how to be well and healthy in mind, body and soul.

One would think after one or two times I’d stop the bad behavior. No, I repeat it over and over. When will I learn and change my habit?

What's the bad habit?
It’s so easy, comfortable, convenient to plunk myself down in front of the computer – and forget to get up, get away, take breaks. I am working at the computer, not playing….that seems good.

But --- again I notice an uncomfortable feeling in my body – the sitting position is putting stress on my bone structure…. this is a symptom – a warning from my body. I’ve experienced it MANY times before that leads to great physical distress that takes time to recover from…. physical distress that extends itself to my thoughts, feelings and more.

My chiropractor tells that people were not born to be in sitting positions for extended periods of time. Our bodies were meant for more varied types of actions and activities. Patients that come to him most often for treatment with their back and body structure issues are those who work in offices at desks, and at similar sedentary positions.

Time to change now. CHANGE is good in this situation. I commit to change now.

What helpful tips and tricks do you use regarding sedentary work time and staying physically healthy? I truly appreciate your thoughts, ideas and tips.

To the good habits you practice today and everyday.

Thanks Amy, Debra and Rebecca,

Your hints are fresh air coming from the outside. My first thought (a brief resistance) with Amy's suggestion surfaced and I caught it right away and dispelled it. Amy, I've never had an alarm clock in my house. I just trained my mind to wake me up at the right time, no matter where I am, what time I need to rise. It works perfectly - never oversleep. Interesting to see resistance to adding an alarm clock - it's an example of our habits again.

Debra, yes, I've commited. I'll send you an email, to check in on our commitment once a week. Keep me on track - and I'll do the same for you, if you wish.

Becky, you're right about intentions. You know, what I've found for myself over the years is that when I speak the intention to others, I'm much more likely to follow through. Regular personal connection with people reminds me I've made a commitment.

I appreciate your thoughts.
Have great weekend.

Hi Barbara,
We sure have opposite problems! I can't seem to get to my computer enough!]:)

It is a matter of timing...setting our intentions and then keeping to what we intend to get done. As you and I have talked about this before...allow yourself the time to take a break for 15 minutes, do something else for that time and then go back to work. The computer definitely is not going anywhere, it will still be there when you get back.

. Take the time to take care of you...get some fresh air, excercise, and a mental break.

I am looking forward to seeing you at RISE:-p

Dear Barbara,

Hi sweetie....I totally agree with Amy......the answers are within you...within us....always.

I always wonder myself why I am challenged with doing the things that I know will be good for me....like exercise....or drinking water....things like that....while I seem to have an easier time with things I am not even sure what the outcome will be....if it will be a good one or not...like I will try some new health drink easier than drinking adequate water every day....it seems so nutty to me..

I have gotten in the habit of looking at the little clock in the bottom right corner.....I look at the time and say I'm going to do this for this period of time and then I'm going to go check the mail...and then I'm going to do this for this period of time and then I'm going to grab some water or work in the yard or run an errand or.....I have taken to just walking down the block....10 minutes...I know it isnt adequate for cardio or anything but it clears my head for writing....and I often get an idea surfacing....when I have been stuck....I totally use the little clock for sites like Facebook or Twitter, etc....or I can get lost there for hours and very sore as well.....

I want to make a change too as far as exercise.....I havent been to the gym or ANYTHIING....except for my little walks down the block....and I need the serotonin!!! I cant seem to motivate myself to get started....so I can totally relate...

LETS DO IT!! lets commit to change....Best wishes!! Love:-x

Dear Barbara,

You could set an alarm… I like to use my cell phone because the sound is like a beautiful chime that could be a gentle reminder to get up and stretch… drink some water… meditate for a moment… etc. before coming back to working at your computer.

And, since you have committed to change nowListen to your Inner Voice as it will guide you in what to do to feel good… Remember you have all the answers inside your Wonderful Being :-x

Peace&Love to You*
~Amy
