The Danger of a Single Story

Aloha Chineme! Happy New Year to You and Amadi! I loved listening to Chimamanda Adichie. No apples! Poor baby... although Mangoes are a fine substitute! Just think of that little kid writing away... Books contain foreign stories about foreigners... "I did not know people like me could exist in literature" "It had not occurred to me that anyone in his family could actually MAKE something" "Her default position toward me as an African was a kind of patronizing, well-meaning pity" "...no possibility of a connection as human equals...." "the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue...it is that they are incomplete..." "it emphasizes how we are different , rather than how we are similar" She makes me want to 'continue to nurse ambition"! I see a world where our default is: I am happy to meet you and excited about seeing all sides of you, and moving forward in understanding of one another." Thank you for posting this here. Thank you for introducing us to another BraveHeart Woman. Love, Linda Wow! Thank you so much for the link to this video. Truly Inspirational. How do we get everyone in the world to watch it, starting with our world leaders! Thanks again. Dear Chineme, Thank you for sharing that powerful video! ... Chimamanda's experiences are what make her a very special unique voice ... She transcends boundaries of color, culture, gender, situs ... Hers is a very powerful voice that resonates ... What makes America sooooo great is precisely our diversity ... We do NOT have a single story ... Our story IS diverse ... Our experiences are diverse ... What I question in Chimamanda's interpretation is the assumption she made of what her American roommate thought about her ... about Africa ... about Nigeria ... What she experienced was ONE American's view ... and we must remind ourselves of that as well ... Those who are well-informed ... those who respect and champion diversity have no real issue with a single story ... because those of us who ONLY experienced diversity and who NEVER knew we were different until we traveled away from "paradise" ... we know that the single story is only told by those who think linearly ... We are blessed in the great USA to know that most of our best citizens are of diversity ... There are so many blended blood lines ... as just a physical representation of our great diversity ... It IS to America that Chimamanda came to express herself or to find more freedom to do so, is it not? ... America beckoned and she answered ... Isn't that an awesome thing? Perspective ... Let's always embrace the ability to see from many perspectives ... to always respect the other voice ... to always try to understand a different point of view ... This global BHW Community goes a very long way to ensuring that no single story will ever fully represent the view of an entire people ... an entire nation ... or an entire community ... We are diverse and that IS awesome! ... Thank you, dear Chineme, for sharing Chimamanda's story and her perspective ... it will open many eyes for sure ... I hope, however, many will also realize that many eyes have seen the glory of diversity long before they saw Chimamanda speak TRUTH ... Aloha pume hana, Barb Dear Chineme, I learned so much in that 18 plus minutes of that video than i could have imagined. I am astounded by her brilliance, clarity, humor, genuine want to help others learn that there are more stories for us to hear, read, write. Different perspectives are a must. You must be such an incredible woman to share this video with us. I am truly humbled. Thank you for helping me grow as a human being. One People, One Country, One Planet, Please. We can all learn how to live in harmony. We are the ones to help make that change we want to see in others.
