Where is Civility?

Posted Sep 8, 2009 08:41 PM
I ask this question knowing that civility exists in this Braveheart Community, but I am heavy hearted as I write this short blog. I was upset to learn that our county schools would not air President Obama's speech to schoolchildren.

I feel this is peculiar as I have never heard of this before. It feels like a blatant show of disrespect to the president, the presidency & the many people who elected him into office. This should not be a political issue.

What are we teaching our children with this action? How will they learn to respect authority if we (as mature grownups) do not. Are we so polarized politically that we cannot listen to one another with respect?

I have contacted members of the school board to express my disappointment. I will keep you posted.

Dear Claudia and Susan,

I'm so glad to hear that you are taking a stand Claudia and taking action as well. It's so amazing to me that this kind of mentality still exist but I do live in Northern California and it's generally very progressive.

...and Susan, you write such a good point about Obama staying focused in the face of all the crudeness that blows his way.

I recently watched the movie "Ghandi" again and realized that there is really no sense in resisting what persist...you become the madding crowd when you fight back. However, as Ghandi put it,and I'm paraphrasing here).., when you actively pursue your own righteous agenda, you will always have the upper hand in the end.

I think Obama understands history in a very deep way and understands on a soul level the advantage of staying focused and fearless.

With a Song in My Heart,

Kathy
Thank you Susan.

I heard back from the school board. They said they received lots of emails and calls regarding this issue (some in support of their decision, others not) I will also follow up with the Superintendent of Schools.

I love your comments!

Dear Claudia, Congratulations on taking the action you are taking. It is so important. In this age when "Beavis and Butt-head" mentality has dummied down the intelligence quotient of even well-known companies who turn to crude advertising techniques instead of sending higher-minded messages, I am so impressed with Obama's dignity in the face of such tremendous resistance. As Emerson said: Crowd mentality tries to reduce life down to the LOWEST common denominator. I think it is interesting that friends and foe of Obama seem to want him to fight (as in sling mud etc.)
What impresses me so much is his fortitude in keeping his message clean and on point with what he has committed to do. I have no idea how this all will turn out but I know we need to encourage each other to take right action, which is clearly what you are doing. Warmly, Susan
