Who needs to be an expert in concentration? Everyone!
How to increase your concentration?
Feel that your concentration is the ARROW!

You want to pierce the object of your concentration with intensive one-pointedness.
You want to master that which you concentrate on, with speed and with ease.
Feel that you are a divine archer. Focus. Aim. Intensity.

Now that the information age is overtaking us in every way, we each need to be able to develop our concentration powers to the maximum.

We need to be able to concentrate without the outer disturbance of all that surrounds us in our daily lives. We need to be able to concentrate without the inner disturbance of the 'thieves' within us: fear, doubt, worry, anxiety.

To be an expert, you may wish to practice concentration first on an object in order to increase your capacity. Choose something that is attractive or beautiful to you. It could be a flower, a candle flame or an art object. Anything that is simple, pure and brings you joy.

Using a timer will help. Begin with very short periods of intense concentration on your object - 10 seconds is a good place to start. Gradually increase the time as you are able to concentrate without the disturbance of the mind.

For those who find it difficult to concentrate for even 10 seconds, stay away from your 'intellectual mind' and bring your 'illumined mind' to the fore. Tip: Place your hand on your heart and allow your concentration to begin from there as you draw from your soul-power.

When practicing the above exercise, keep your inner vigilance and alertness. Allow only your concentration with your object, not with the thoughts that try to enter your mind.

Practice. You can do it!
Increase your concentration today!

Hi Donna,

So glad that you are "on track again." :)

Your past yoga and meditation experience are most probably a great help and your responsiveness to all in our communities undoubtedly helps.

Keep up the great work!

Hi Rijuta,

This topic and exercise are very helpful. Funny thing though....I do practice yoga and meditation however not as disciplined as I should though. See I was very very strict with my practice at one time but recently I fell away from it ( not totally but I had some personal things that just sidetracked me) Although that is one of the things yoga and meditation are suppose to help us with ..haha To be able to handle life and all its ups and downs in a very ummm well.. I guess you would say.. " accepting manner' Knowing ..everything comes to pass and everything happens for a reason.. So the reason i tell you all this is because...I believe practicing yoga and meditation help support what you state here..about concentration. So I do understand and know what needs to be learned and part of everyday life ..I just fell by the way side..but am on track now again due to my own realization ..and also a little help from my creative concentration friend .. I just love your community ..It is truly very helpful...informative..active and unified.

Thanks again

Hi Krista (kdmarkstrom),

I admire you for going back to college for your degree(s) after the age of 50!!! :O :)

Also happy that you are having such a wonderful experience in your 'life classroom' and learning to 'focus on the world -- micro and macro'.
It is indeed helpful, as you so beautifully illustrate for us, to use every life experience as a learning experience!

Dear Rijuta,

I am 54 and have been back in college for the past two years finishing up an undergrad degree. Hopefully after this, I will be obtaining a masters degree -- work-related, and a doctorate that will be for me because it is something I've dreamed of for many yeas.

Being back in school has required amazing amounts of focus and concentration. I attend a small liberal arts community that is still by day a women's college, although adult learners are able to attend classes with the days students. I am considered an adult continuing ed learner :D

What this has done for me is to focus on the world -- micro and macro -- at large. There have been many obstacles and sadnesses over the past two years. Focusing on school has actually brought me to a point of being able to let go of worry, sadness, anxiety, fear, control.

As you say, it is very important to focus on a single point -- something small. However, having something to focus on outside of one's pre-established worldviews makes for a really great large focus! And, it's quite awesome to be surrounded by such strong, thought-filled and thoughtful young women!

peace,
kdmarkstrom

Hi Stephanie, the Archer! ;)
The Archer, or the person pointing the arrow, is also what I identify with.
That way I feel more involved with the energy of the arrow.
Great Stephanie!

Hi Billie,

You are welcome!
So happy that you were helped to focus. :)
Sometimes all it takes to make a difference is extra energy pointed in one direction.

Thanks Rijuta,
As I read the article I envisioned the tip of the arrow,
and how so many times I start out focused and sharp, just like the tip of arrow. Instead of concentrating on an object for the exercise, I'm more intrigued with the fact that I'm the Archer.
For a very long time I've not been the Archer in my life.
Good Food.......thanks

Stephanie
Thank You
You have helped me focus,I am truly grateful for your help.
Iam healing!:-x
Dear Debra,

Thank you for your archery story. But now, dear Debra, your negative chatter has diminished.

You are a dear!

my first thought was remembering when I got an an archery set for Christmas.....me and my sisters would play with them in the backyard. I remember way back then saying to myself I couldnt do it.......way back then.....the negative chatter was already in place....interesting.

my second thought was how focusing on the breath clears that chatter....calms me....brings me back to the heart rather than the head.

Always great to read your posts...they are very healing!

Much Love,

Debra

Hi Marion,

So happy that you felt the exercise helped you to clear your mind and to feel peace and joy.
As a Social Worker, perhaps you can do this exercise after you finish with each 'client'.

Much peace to you, :-x
