Teach Your Child to Concentrate - One Minute at a Time

Every Thursday morning for 45 minutes, I teach a group of young teenagers hatha yoga and concentration. It is quite astounding how rapidly their concentration improves through the practice of yoga.

We spend about 30 minutes on hatha yoga and approximately 15 minutes on concentration exercises. The following exercise is helpful not only for young teenagers but for the parents as well.

Use a watch with a timer or any other timer you have available.
Set your intention ahead of time by choosing one word that represents what you will concentrate on. It could be a quality you would like to manifest or any inspiring word that is meaningful to you in the moment.

Yesterday we used the 'heart'. The children decided that if their mind began to wander they would say, "my heart, my heart, my heart." We placed our hands on our hearts, closed our eyes, and I set the alarm.

At the end of one minute, interestingly enough, most of the children did not open their eyes. They were still wrapped up in concentrating on their heart.

When asked what had changed for them, one girl replied, "I feel calmer." I then asked a boy what he felt; he said, "I feel quieter."

As I watched, their faces looked more peaceful; they were less restless (no unconscious moving of body parts) and feeling of their presence (their vibration) had changed.

What could this quick exercise do for your children - for you? It only takes one minute. I invite you to use it with your children and use it yourself, as often as you feel you 'need' it.

Peace, :)

I recently hired a private YOGI and I LOVE the change that is happening in my SOUL! It is absolutely fantastic - - yes peaceful - - yes healthy - - yes quieter - - yes in silence - - yes in breath - - yes in my body - - yes in my soul - - yes yes yes yes yes! Love it - - thanks for all your encouragement! It is SO definitely worth the time.

Dear Phebe,

Excellent question! With really young children, we usually play concentration games or games requiring them to focus steadily on one thing.

You can try a version of the following.
Sew or buy a dozen or so small brightly colored bean bags and buy a fairly large bucket into which the children will throw the beanbags.

The object of the game is to see how many beanbags the child can get into the bucket in 15 to 30 seconds. Have them step 2 or 3 paces away from the bucket, depending upon age. They are not competing with each other; they are competing with themselves.

Have them take 3 deep breaths, while looking only at the opening in the bucket. Begin. When time is up, they must stop. Whatever the results, we always praise them.

After the first round, stop, rest, begin the second round.
This time, before throwing each beanbag, have the child take 2 seconds and 'imagine' his/her beanbag going right into the bucket. The child then immediately throws.

Notice how quickly their score improves when they use their imagination and are more intensely focused!

This process continues until they can concentrate on the same exercise in their minds for 30 seconds - WITHOUT doing the physical action.

Do you see how this progresses?

Otherwise, and very simply, your son can close his eyes, place his hands on his heart and repeat along with you: "I am feeling love in my heart. I am feeling love in my heart," etc. for at least 30 seconds.

Let us know what happens when you use these techniques with your child.
'Let it be fun'!!!

Dear Stephanie and Crystal,

Appreciate that you are interested in helping children (and adults) to learn how to listen to their inner voices and to bring more peace and quiet into their beings. :)

Thank you for your comments.

Rijuta,

An excellent exercise for children of all ages! Just to teach them how to 'be'.... to be in the moment, to listen to their inner voices!

Thanks for sharing,
Crystal
Dear rijuta,

Meditation and quieting of the spirit are essential to health and well being. Kids need this, too!!

Hi Krista,

Hopefully, this kind of 'education' will be implemented in many school systems in the very near future.
To get different results, we have to change the way we do things. It's easy, the kids love it and they have fun with it! :-D

Thank you for your comment, Krista!

This is incredible...

What would happen if public and/or private schools had the ability to take a few minutes with small group of teens to work with them this way?

Thanks, Rujita!
