Not Halloween Again!!

Sounds like you made a safe place for the kiddos to have some fun. Bet you do have some great photos and memories! Wish I coulda seen it. My grandson has his birthday party around mid October, and my daughter always goes all out with the decorations etc... I just refer to it as a costume party. I see more and more families holding events at their homes, and inviting just friends and family for Halloween, I don't think the old time Trick or Treating will ever be back...we just don't live in that world anymore. Thanks for sharing you memories Rubie. We used to have a haunted house in our garage every year, (until we moved) and the same kids would come every year, and the amount of children began to grow with each passing year. We had loads of fun ourselves, plus felt we were doing a service, because the kids could replace lots of door-to-door, and lots of sweet candy with a really good scare and a great time! We gave treats of course, but the time they would have spent going from door to door, they were going through our amazing maze of thrills and surprises! It was quite an experience! Our kids are too old now, (and so are we) so we don't do that anymore, and we usually turn the lights out too. It's just too much for us these days. But still, we have our wonderful memories, and lots of pictures of by-gone days of our amazing maze of thrills and chills. Rubie Yup I remember the "Good Ol Days" and I'm older than you LOL, We used to go out and stay out till 11:00 and fill up bag after bag of candy and homemade treats, you didn't have to worry about bullies, or needles, poison in your candy, you didn't have to take bags of candy to be X-rayed at the local clinic. Bout the only thing that made you sick was consuming too much of a good thing. Most had homemade costumes, and make-up was borrowed from Moms purse. No worries about some strange pedophile trying to hurt you, the worst thing that happened was someone jumping out from behind a tree and yelling BOO!! The next day we would take what we wanted from the bags, and then combine all of the 3 kids bags and take a drive to the local orphanage to deliver grocery bags of candy to the kids...we got the biggest thrill outta seeing their faces light up. But that is no longer the way it is, it hasn't been that way for many many years, and I for one feel that the dangers of todays twisted society, far outweigh the fun. pssst...that rabbit picture made me laugh so hard, just had to use it. As I was reading your blog, I couldn't help but feel really sad. Sad that today's children cannot experience Halloween as I did when I was a child. Back then, we'd stay out late--going from door to door. Most of the adults would be sitting on their porches, pumpkins glowing, with all sorts of treats. Some would give us homemade cookies, fresh from the oven. Others gave us homemade popcorn balls. We usually got so much hot apple cider that we had to ask to use someone's bathroom--and that someone always said yes, come on inside. We weren't afraid of them or their treats.
Growing up like I did, Halloween really was a treat. I got to see how other people lived. I got all sorts of good stuff and lots of praise. They always said our costumes were cute. Back then, adults could pat you on the back and pinch your cheek. Back then, kids weren't afraid of strangers. Heck, we didn't see adults as strangers. We saw them as adults. And we knew to listen to them and to show them respect. So, as Halloween approaches, I will have my door open, and I will be smiling and telling the little ones that their costumes are cute. And I'll be shoveling lots of candy into their bags. Maybe in my smile and my kind words they'll be able to see that not all adults are dangerous. I know there won't be as many kids out as last year. Seems every year, their numbers decline. How sad. How very, very sad that so many children are missing out on what should be one of the most fun nights of their lives. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I have the grandkids over and we eat pizza and hang out until it's time for them to go Trick-or-Treating. This year, I plan to light a fire in my backyard oven. Who knows maybe I'll even dance under the moon. It won't be full until the second of November, but I can pretend. Thanks for sharing. Your blog brought back a lot of good memories. Peace, blessings, and much love to you. Diana Phoenix Rising Writers' Corner
