You may have heard of the Washington DC Metro train crash that killed six people. Have you ever wondered how you would react in a crash? A inspiring and miraculous story of what happened in the most affected car shows how important it can be just to be there for someone.

The Rev. Dave Bottoms, a chaplain who’d served in Iraq, was riding the car when the collision occurred. As he saw a wave of debris hurling toward him, he prayed “God, make it stop.” It stopped just before his seat.

As you can imagine, there was crying, screaming, and confusion. Rev. Bottoms heard, "I'm here. I'm here. Please don't leave me." He crawled toward the woman’s voice, which was under a huge pile of debis. Years ago, when he first joined the service, a mentor had told him: "You don't let anyone suffer alone."

She told him she was dying. He told LaVonda King she was not alone. People were desperately trying to get out of the car. It has fumes, dust, and they were worried about explosions. Rev. Bottoms stayed, reassuring her he was still right there.

Knowing that hearing is the last sense to go, he kept talking to her even after she stopped moaning. Rev. Bottoms was the last person to leave the car after help arrived, but LaVonda felt a caring human connection before she passed on.

You can read the full story at Three Minutes to Ft Totten.
Bottoms was a hero, showing incredible courage to comfort another who was dying. It made me think about how just being there, giving full, caring attention to someone, is a gift under any circumstances. Bottoms recited the Lord’s Prayer, but mostly he just let her know someone cared.”

Namaste,
Hedy

This man is a true example of a spirit having a human experience. He knew what was important, and he tended to it. While I was reading your blog, a quote from Rumi kept flitting through my mind: "I came from Elsewhere, and though I do not know where that is, I am certain to return there in the end." Rev. Bottoms stepped out knowing that this physical existence we are all experiencing is not all there is. His calling as well as our own is to live our lives with our eyes on that place from whence we came. The reverend set a wonderful example for all of us to follow.

Peace and blessings.

Aloha Hedy,

Thank you for bringing this act to our attention.

I like to think I would be the kind of person others would want in their life boat... Rev. Bottoms certainly is.

In the aftermath of 911... as I was trying so hard to reconcile it all... I was overcome by the feeling that the good to be had out of it all...and there always is an element of good.. was the knowledge - the re-affirmation - that the jerk who cuts you off in traffic, will, in the right set of circumstances put their life on the line to bring you to safety... and that is a great comfort.

The human connection is very strong.

Thank you Hedy:

When I hear people comment about the "world" and how "bad things are" I love to read these stories.

I believe there are "angels among us" and Rev. Bottoms was "showing his wings"

I bet when it is his time to leave this earth, Ms. King will be there to help him cross-over.

Good story. I'm inspired. Thanks for posting.

this was a truly compassionate act. I believe that this compassion is being re-enacted daily by millions of us. The acts may not be as visibly heroic as Rev Bottoms but nonetheless, they require us to step aside from our selfish Ego selves and reach into the communal pool of our Being. It is in these actions that we become who we truly are in Spirit. Namaste,
What an amazing story. I've got tears in my eyes right now, and I can imagine the comfort he gave that woman just by staying with her. Though I've not been in any situation remotely similar, I can relate to this story because of my experience with the EMT's who came to my house after my 18-month-old had his first seizure 2 weeks ago. There was one gentleman in particular who helped me immensely with his calmness and sincerity. He looked straight into my eyes and talked so calmly to me. Prior to that, I was extremely scared and freaked out, crying and all. His energy, his ability to be so present with me sticks out in my mind from the whole experience, because I felt genuinely nurtured and "held". I'm so grateful for people like Ryan (that's the EMT's name) and for Rev. Bottoms to give comfort and help usher people into a better space/place.

Thank you for sharing, Hedy.
Gratefully,
Jenna
If ever I'm dying in an accident I hope there will be a Rev. Bottoms for me.

Hedy,

Thanks for sharing this inspiring story of human kindness.
LaVonda was indeed a very brave woman....and Rev. Bottoms kindly shared his heart and comforted her.

Let's remember that we may all have the opportunity to share our brave hearts at a moments notice.
May we be ready....:-x
