What happiness and the flu have in common

Posted Feb 23, 2009 09:47 PM
Good news! Science has proven that happiness is contagious, and it's contagious even to people who don't directly come into contact with the happy person!

A 20 year study of more than 4,700 people found that people who are happy or become happy increase the chances that those they know, or even don't know but are in their network, will be happy. read study here
More happy news: unhappiness is somewhat less infectious than happiness! Good vibes spread more easily.

Thus, being in a network of happy people, like Braveheart Women, promotes happiness!

This reminds me of part of an interesting experiment my partner, Judi Piani (aka Braveheart's EndlessPossibilities), does with her Reiki I students. She has one student stand at one end of the room, the rest behind Judi at the other end. She then measures the aura of the single student using dowsing rods. Then she tells the group behind her to think negative thoughts about the single student. They all watch that person's aura shrink. When the group thinks positive thoughts, the person's aura expands.

Judi then has the test student think positive, loving thoughts while the group thinks negative thoughts. The aura is unaffected.

This dramatically shows how our thoughts, even not voiced, are energy that influence other people for good or ill. We need to stay positive to prevent our energy from being affected, not just by negative thoughts about us, but by all the negativity out there in the world.

Like thoughts, feelings, like happiness, have energy. Both affect others as well as ourselves. Once we realize just what kind of influence we can have, it expands our view of how we can happily serve.

Amelia,

I love your animal insights! You said, "When you have a pack of dogs together, I wonder if the one that wags his tail is truly happy or is just bluffing the others who may have their hackles raised? Which aura would be magnified?"

A fascinating question! We know that if you actually smile with your eyes crinkling, you improve your mood. If you stand up straighter, you feel better, so I'm guessing the wagger would have the bigger aura.

We know animals care about status, and we know some animals, like chimps, are capable of deception, but I think one thing a lot of people value about dogs is we believe they don't consciously deceive, there's a kind of honesty. Is this true?

Smiles and wags,
Hedy
Lana,

Thank you for sharing! You provided so much food for thought

You said, "The real cool thing is that when lots of people get together and think happy thoughts the energy gets even stronger!"

Yes, I've always felt there's a special energy from being in a group of friends! Beyond that, I think that's behind the saying "whenever three or more are gathered in his name there is love" in Christianity. In Judaism, while praying alone or in small groups is encouraged, certain kinds of prayers and events require the presence of at least ten people, and praying in that size group is considered especially important. This group effect may be part of why church goers tend to be healthier. It's not just that there's blood pressure screening and social support, in churches dedicated to love there's all the positive vibration.

You said, "We can now track specific negative thoughts to pathology in specific organs!" This has long fascinated me, and I've enjoyed Louise Hay on this. The body provides such perfect metaphors. Yesterday I felt a blockage in a client's small intestine. It told me that there was something she couldn't digest. When I asked, she told me that she was having trouble dealing with a recent experience that brought up a very deep fear. We talked about the gifts in suffering, how we can digest and transform our thoughts and feelings. The traumatic experience was a kind of cod liver oil, not pleasant to swallow, but if she could be open to its gift, she could transform and absorb it, and it would actually nourish her and help her grow. What a perfect message her body provided!

I'll write other blogs on some of your comments soon.

Sending positive vibrations,
Hedy
Hedy,

When you have a pack of dogs together, I wonder if the one that wags his tail is truly happy or is just bluffing the others who may have their hackles raised? Which aura would be magnified?

It would be interesting to observe whether the other dogs start wagging also. I know that it can happen one on one, either way.

This will be a great test for the dog park...with human influence for all dogs to be happy.:)

Living in the moment,

Amelia
Thanks Hedy, for the great post! I am glad I am starting my day reading this. Now I can feel happy and be more aware that my own energy will affect others especially if it is of happy emotions. It's also interesting to know that I don't have to necessarily be affected by someone's bad mood. In fact I can help them if I send positive energy their way. :)

That is good news Hedy. Happiness is contagious! :-D

Happiness is more than contagious. Each time we feel and express the emotion of happiness, that one ripple or vibration goes out beyond our own aura and continues on and on. So we can definitely feel that our happiness adds to the happiness 'pool' of the world. Our positive energy means so much!!!

Hello Hedy,

Thank you kindly for sharing this ... I had seen similar studies but not expressed quite this way,,, you have said it so eloquently and this is easy to apply.

May you be showered with happiness,

Hi Hedy,

Very interesting.... This makes me happy, that unhappiness isn't as infectious as happiness!

Stay positive,

Audie
