I’m so glad I was rear ended

Posted Mar 29, 2009 04:20 PM
Yesterday on Car Talk, Tom & Ray told the caller to sit down they had some bad news about his car. Caller Roman from Chicago said, “It’s all good news.” The car guys were a bit nonplussed. I admired Roman's perspective. Sometimes when I hear stories about the hardships many people are suffering in this economic situation my immediate reaction is not that “it’s all good.”

The universe gave me a little jolt to help me when my 2001 Volvo was rear ended at a stop light by what seemed at the time to be the most enormous SUV I’d ever seen up too close. The other driver was very nice and asked if I’d be willing to get an estimate and let him cover my expenses rather than go to insurance, if the cost wasn’t too high.

It felt good to be able to help him this way, and I got an estimate lower than I’d expected from a great Green-friendly car repair place. I didn’t have any whiplash or other problems (I gave myself Reiki afterward). The driver brought me a money order, so I thought that was it. Not exactly all good, but not bad. I figured I'd somehow attracted this, but it seemed minor, so I didn't think more on the lesson.

Then, after we'd settled, the repair place called to say that their initial estimate was low. Not good! When they got the bumper off, they discovered that the connections that attached the bumper to the car were in bad shape, and it would be good to fix this now, rather than after the bumper had been further damaged by connections failing. Thus, we saved a lot of money from having trouble with the bumper down the road, since this problem could be repaired at the same time. Good!

The frosting on the cake came when I was chatting with the owner, who told me that they were certified Volvo mechanics. I immediately asked him for an estimate on an expensive job I had coming up at my usual place, and saved more than the additional repair costs by having him do it.

It sometimes takes years, if ever, to see the silver lining or larger view, but it was a wonderful reminder to me that things are not always what they seem or feel from my limited perspective. That’s why I’m so grateful that I was rear ended when I needed a nudge.

What helps you remember that it's all good?

Hi Hedy,

Glad your OK!!!!! and that you are grateful for your 'nudge'

If we can keep things in perspective good or bad and give the space needed to the situation we usually can see that silver lining.

Stay Pawsitive,

Audie
Hi Hedy, Yes, 'it is all good' - - - if the intention is there to accept that 'it is all good'.

I know in my case I have said and felt that 'it is all good' for so long now that in fact, it is all good from my perspective. On the occasion that I 'forget' that a particular experience is all good, the experience becomes not all good from my perspective.

What helps me to remember is not only my past experiences with the 'pain' of not seeing an experience as all good but mostly the gratitude of realizing the positive outcomes of what at first appear to be major challenges.

Intention to feel that 'it is all good' and Gratitude for knowing that 'it is all good' best serve me.

Thanks as for sharing your experience!

Dear Hedy,

I am grateful for my challenges, obstacles, even mistakes for they are part of who I am today. I no longer regret the past. Nor do I want to block it all out and forget about it. Some things I even get a good laugh about today....so yes, its all good!

Thank you...I am glad it wasnt a major accident and you are ok. I got in an accident on Christmas Eve....for me it was a wake up call because I was totally swirling around in my head for weeks. It could have been much worse.

Thanks for sharing this story.

Hedy, It took me a while but I am in continuance learning that it's all good when I awake in the morning and when I retire at night. :)

Linda and Barbara,

Thanks for your comments. Linda, it does help me to read inspiring stories, and you both point out that obstacles can be turned into opportunities, always for growth and understanding. I'll look up that book. Barbara, thanks for a succinct reminder of the perspective that's the key.

Appreciatively,
Hedy
Hi Hedy,

It’s all good. Really hadn’t heard that comment until hanging around Charlie and Ellie Drake. I liked what they said because it was a short statement of acceptance of anything and everything that happens to us. It sounded good to my ears.

I was taught as a child to accept what is, what happens, because I can overcome everything if I choose to. I was conditioned by my parents to believe that.

That said, I had to learn that sometimes I cannot overcome things because I have no control over them, like discrimination in the workplace. So short term or until I make a change, I did not feel it was all good. However. long term I’ve gained great understanding of situations people face, and I’m grateful for the wisdom gained from those experiences.

It’s all good is a great way to look at life and it’s happenings short term, then take steps to move forward from bad situations. That makes it all good.

Aloha Hedy,
I'm reading Lance Armstrong's book: It's Not About TheBike The recurring theme as he reconstructs his childhood as the only child of a 17 year-old, BRAVEHEART woman, is: Turn your obstacles into opportunities! Many things challenged him on his road to becoming an elite athlete. At a young age, with the great guidance of a loving mom, he was learning to bloom where he was planted. It's an inspiring, true story about learning to hold gratitude for each event that shapes us as we journey.

I have experienced this truth so many times...and it is still a challenge for me to swallow "It's All Good" when it seems to be a senseless catastrophe at first blush. Even when it's no more than an irritant, I have to "course correct" on a regular basis to remind myself that the fullness of time always reveals the benefit. We are truly in the place that best serves us, at all times, and it really is all for good.

I'm glad the Volvo, and you came through your rear ending with gratitude!
