When I was in the 5th grade, our music teacher taught these lyrics to the class. At that age, the words were interesting and made me very curious to know more...

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breath free;
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless,
Tempest-tossed to me
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

These are the finishing sentences inscribed on a bronze plaque in the interior of the pedestal at The Statue of Liberty...the sonnet "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus.

...I then began to truly realize what our country stood for in the world...

I went to the statue once and really took these words in.
The concepts of America are so beautiful. I have always, always felt so grateful to be born in this country.

For we, who are born here know nothing of the struggles that others, like Ellie have faced just to have the opportunity to live in such a magnificent place.

Peace,
Robin Buckley
