Stop Multitasking and Start Getting More Done

Posted Sep 18, 2009 02:00 AM
Like many of us, I have always taken pride in the fact that I could multitask. As a matter of fact, I had that listed on my last resume as one of my strengths. Silly me! I drew attention to the fact that I could quite easily work on several projects at the same time, giving them all the same level of neglect while taking longer to accomplish them, resulting in consistently mediocre work.

Don't get me wrong. I don't dispute the fact that we can talk on the phone while we wash dishes, or walk the dog, or sort laundry. It's easy to do two things simultaneously that are routine and don't require focus or emotional involvement. But many of the tasks in our lives deserve and need our undivided attention.

When you multitask, you aren't doing two things at once; you're actually rapidly shifting attention from one task to another, back and forth, back and forth, like when you're preparing a proposal and you have to keep stopping to answer your phone.

When you shift tasks, you also shift mindsets, so to speak, which takes time. And if you are shifting tasks frequently, you usually keep yourself poised for the next interruption, never fully engaging in the task at hand. In other words, not giving it your full effort. And let's not even talk about how exhausting multitasking can be. That's a whole other post.

Since most jobs don't allow you to turn off your phone and shut down your email while you work on a project, you need a strategy that allows for those interruptions. I've found it helpful to break a large project into small, bite-sized steps and focus on only one step at a time. Each step usually only takes about 20-30 minutes to complete, time enough before the phone rings again. And before I know it, the project is done, without feeling like I've been in a game of ping-pong.

Thankfully, I can say that today I am a recovering multitasker. I still struggle with overwhelm sometimes and the urge to start numerous projects at once, but with my solid system in place, I can quickly focus and accomplish a lot more in less time.

Hi Melissa,

Multi-tasking as a way to accomplish more, be more successful, or believing it's a necessary part of our lives -- This is one of the MOST DESTRUCTIVE beliefs and actions we practice. We all lose more than we gain.

Think about it. Multi-tasking is filled with distraction, lack of focus, giving a 'tiny bit' to many things, it overwhelms our mind and thus our body, soul, health....... lots more.

A part of it is that we have to SLOW DOWN. Do 1 thing at a time until it's complete, then move to the next, step by step. That will require all of life to slow down - how GREAT that will be. We will live like we were designed as human beings - having more success, satisfaction, fulfillment, joy, happiness, greater accomplishments, greater excellence. The world will change for the better when we get back to the basics.

You shared some valuable tips on how to do that. Hurrah.

Debra,

Wow, we must be sharing a brain, as my daughter says.

I actually wrote this article about six months ago and had it posted on my web site. I thought I would share it here on BraveHeart Women because multi-tasking seems to be the go-to tool for women.

We women tend to rely on multi-tasking a lot more than men to get our daily responsibilities accomplished. Unfortunately, it usually, eventually, leads to overwhelm and exhaustion.

Linda,

You're right. We need to focus only on the task at hand, if possible. When we are single-focused, we can typically get the job done faster and better.

Hi Melissa....

Great post!
We are all in the "age of multi-tasking"....however you have pointed out the importance of being focused on what you're doing....and to be in the moment with your attention on the "task" in front of you.

Thanks for the great reminders...:-D

Dear Melissa

Whooooaaaa! I was just thinking about this....seriously.....the question whether multi-tasking is a good thing...I edited it out of my blog because I felt it was a whole other topic.....I also have used it to describe myself and thought....wait a minute...I'm not so sure that's a good thing anymore.

I just wrote about being overwhelmed. I can get overwhelmed even if I am doing what I love. Multi-tasking can lead to my spiraling out of control:O

I subscribe to the one step at a time theory. It is interesting because Bell posted a blog before I did....also about the same thing. All 3 of us must be connected tonight....;)

Thank you for this post! Much Love:-x
