Outhouses I Have Known
6 Comments
We live in an 1860's pioneer cottage and still keep an outhouse in our garden. It is covered with a grape vine so is a bit like going in to a cave. It is very clean and cute and people love it. If you understand the principles of composting there is no need for bad smells. Yes those cold winter nights with the hot water bottles and blankets... you don't forget them fast. Another advantage to them is if the power goes off. It is very peaceful in the summer with the birds singing too. Hi Carrie, I enjoyed your memories - brought back mine too. We had only the 'outhouse' until I left home to get married. No problems ever asking family members when they'd be through in the bathroom...no lingering there! Another neat thing, I think. The galvanized aluminum bathtub broght into the house for baths on Saturday. It took more hot water than we could heat on the stove, so we'd wash as quickly as possible so siblings could also have a somewhat warm bath. All of us in the same water. People today may scoff at that, but we were clean, healthy, happy, knew how to save our natural resources. So it was good, even though not the most convenient. Barbara Filla Passionate about people, entrepreneurs and business Back in my "going back to my roots" days in the early 70's, I moved to Marshall, Arkansas with 3 of my bestest friends. We lived on top of a mountain in an 8' x 12' cabin. We built an outhouse that was so fabulous that it became the favorite hangout for the local mama bear!! She stole all the hay and lime and made a mess out there!! But, we let her have it, if you know what I mean...... Do bears pooh in the woods??? No, they build outhouses!! Kathy Bibby I am trying to forget my scary experiences of the outhouse. I was so little that I almost fell in. Sincerely, Debra Honor Your Truth Hehe, My grandfather had a two seater in his outhouse!!! His was not pretty like the photos you shared.
