Formula To Manifest - Affirmations, Useful or Not?

Posted Aug 2, 2009 05:21 PM
Affirmations - Are you using them for self empowerment, and do they work for you?

Late one evening, my 20 year old son came back from visiting some friends and upon walking into the kitchen said," Mom, what do you think about affirmations? Some of the authors, whose books I have read, appear to be changing their thoughts on the use of affirmations?"

Well that question certainly got us talking into the wee hours, and led me to do more reading and reflecting.

I would like to share the clarity I gained.

Affirmations are for you and me the individual, and not for the Universe itself. Affirmations are not to be used as a plea or thought of as a bargaining tool with the Universe.

Affirmations are simply a tool like many others to help us retrain our subconscious mind.

When we start using our chosen affirmations, it is very normal that at first they may not feel completely true. We are not to worry about that. We simply need to say them slowly, over and over again (5 minutes upon awakening and 5 minutes before retiring for the night), to help cleanse our subsconcious of false beliefs, and instead imprint a new and better belief.

N.B. A word of caution: Although it is normal that at first an affirmation may feel untrue and actually feel like a lie until it gains momentum, you will be better served if you can start with smaller steps. In other words, choose an affirmation that is more believable until you can move on to exactly what you want to experience.

Example: Rather than saying, I am abundant( and currently you cannot make your bill payments) try saying something like, "God ( use the label that fits for you) is the source of all of my supply. All of my needs are met in every moment in time and point in space. Every day I am advancing spritually, mentally, financially and in all ways."

Health, success and wealth are all in the mind. Dr. Joseph Murphy teaches this principle in much detail and clearly states that we really need to work much more on our minds than on our current conditions.

No it does not mean, you can sit on the couch all day and simply repeat words. What it means is that you take inspired action, as we are taught here in the BraveHeart community, while using your affirmations to help your personal growth and transformation.

The key to remember is that : Your deeper mind will come to accept as a fact, whatever it is that you repeat to it often enough, in slow convincing tones.

Ideas are imbedded in the subconscious mind with repetition; by having faith and expecting the desired results.

You must believe in the power of your word.

Just like the seeds that are planted in the ground, although you do not see them, they come to bear the plant and fruit... so too the seeds (thoughts) you
plant in your mind will come to bear their fruit.

When we water and fertlize seeds in our garden they grow better and faster. Your mind works the same way. Cultivate the new thoughts you are putting in your head. Give these positive thoughts frequent attention and pull out the negative thoughts.

You must know what you are doing with affirmations (retraining your mind) and why you are using them. For affirmations to work, they are not to be repeated in vain with no conscious thought.

My favourite affirmation from Dr. Joseph Murphy, that I use morning and night to retrain my subconscious is:" I am now writing in my subconscious mind the idea of God's ( again use the term that suits you) wealth. God is the source of all of my supply, and I know that God is the life principle within me and I know that I am alive. All of my needs are met in every moment in time and point in space. God's wealth flows freely, joyously, and ceasessly into my experience and I give thanks for God's riches forever circulating in my experience." Then I go about my day.

At first no matter how often a negative thought pops into your head, counter it with "God (use the term that is right for you) is my instant supply meeting that need right now." Or " God is my instant and everlasting supply and that bill is paid in Divine order."

After a while your thoughts of lack will lose their momentum and your new thoughts will gain speed. It is very important that we be patient with ourselves during the retraining of our mind. Most people start and give up much too quickly, thus confusing their subconscious.

If we keep saying things like "I cannot afford that or I can't buy that." our subconscious mind takes us literally and we block all of our good from coming to us.

Instead saying something like." That beautiful vehicle is for sale. It's a Divine idea and I accept in Divine order through Divine love."

Retraining our subconscious mind for all that is good and beautiful, will set the law of opulence in motion for us.

We need to feed our minds with patterns of thought that give life rather than with patterns of thought that cut off life.

We must not go into retraining our subconscious with struggle and strife. You cannot force your thoughts any more than you can force a plant to grow.

We must learn to calm our body prior to repeating our affirmations so that our mind is more receptive. It is a quiet mind that accomplishes things.

For the sceptic in us, if we think that words repeated over and over do not work, simply step back and think about what you were told as a child. Which words were repeated over and over to you by well meaning adults?

Did you grow up believing that you were capable, worthy, deserving of all that is good? Or, did you grow up believing (and still believe) that you were stupid, non athletic, not capable of much and so on?

Summary:

Decide on what is important to you.

Word affirmations that you can start to use morning and night, to retrain your subconscious.

Repeat your new thought patterns over and over ( 5-10 minutes twice daily).

Have faith this will work for you.

Expect that by retraining your subconscious you will achieve new results.

I love to start my day with affirmations during my prayer and meditation time. My day is totally out of sync if I miss one phase of devotion time. Here's one of my favorite affirmations:

If I am not grounded, I may either be elated or depressed. To be grounded means to be in the moment, to breathe, to have gratitude for my life as it is today while I take steps in the direction of my vision. To be grounded is to be in the flow. ~Ellie Drake

Very interesting and very useful information. I am a big believer and proponent of affirmations and do a lot of work with them.
Along with affirmations,
I recommend vision or dream boards,
Guided introspection,
Visualization,
Guided meditation,
and as you mentioned Positive Prayer.

I listen to ELLIE DRAKE's morning and evening affirmations and my children listen to her children's affirmations every day. We have been utilizing these excellent cd's in our home for at least 2 years now and we love them!

At a low point in my life I would go for brisk walks and say in tming with my breathing and steps, "I am somebody, I am worthwhile, I am somebody, I am God's child." I agree with you totally that affirmations are to retrain the brain. But I also believe in prayer. Not to some vague impersonal universe, but to God. I don't pray for wealth because its such a relative thing and never brings happiness. I do pray more like the prayer of Jabez and ask God to bless me so that I may be a blessing. I ask him to expand the borders of my tent, which in my case means my influence and impact in ministry, and to provide for me enough so that I am not distracted by finances. Some of that has meant that he has made me speak up and set boundaries with myself and my husband so that we now do an adequate job of living within our means. The whole abundance mentality has led to too many people forced to leave foreclosed homes.

Aloha Lynette,
Thanks for your words of wisdom about affirmations. I have been doing them, off and on, for 34 yrs. and I know they work. Sometimes self doubt stops me from doing affirmations. I agree with your gentle approach, which I have found makes all the difference.
Our minds are either our friend or our enemy depending on what content they hold. The magic is the mind can not tell the difference between reality and fantasy, so we can retrain our minds when we put in consistent effort over time.
My offering to the world is to show people what is going on in their subconscious that is undermining their desire and how to transform their minds so it welcomes and holds positive and noble thoughts. Blessings, Sheila Radha
