Are Your Habits Empowering or Disempowering You?

Posted Mar 1, 2009 11:39 PM
"Bad habits are like a comfortable bed, easy to get into, but hard to get out of." - Author unknown.

Our habits are either creating big successful rewards for us or bringing about negative consequences. Sometimes to our surprise, the results of our habits do not show up till much later.

For example, habits related to our health often do not show up for years - whether that be from smoking, from lack of exercise, from drinking too much coffee or not drinking enough water.

In my personal experience, I have come to realize that everything one does - actually counts. If we can catch ourselves quickly enough the effects from a negative habit can be minimized or reversed without too much pain. However it will still take some effort on our part.

Ladies, it all comes down to choices. We can start by looking at the different areas of our life and decide which area we would like to enhance, then evaluate the habits we practice in that area.

Are all these habits serving you? If not, which one would you like to change?

Tip: Commit to changing 3-4 habits per year - for a couple of years and see how your life transforms. You may have heard folks say that it takes 21 days to change a habit. But whether it takes 21 days or 21 weeks or more - the important thing to remember is that we can change any habit if we make a commitment to it.

We can get some help and support along the way. We may even want to use an accountability partner where each could hold the other accountable to changing one habit.

I would venture to say that you will feel so good as you change your habit or eliminate it completely that you will wonder why you never started earlier.

Watch our thoughts; they become words. Watch our words; they become actions. Watch our actions; they become habits. Watch our habits; they become character. Watch our character; it becomes our destiny.

Wonderful post Lynette. It's absolutely true,a bad habit becomes comfortable.I am working on going to bed early,by midnight. As you can see, that I have some work to do.My problem is,that as the night progresses I get more energy. I won't give up though.
Hi Lynette,

You stated; "the important thing to remember is that we can change any habit if we make a commitment to it."

I think this is the step that most good intentions are lacking. Making the commitment to change and getting the support that will assist you in keeping that commitment is the key.

I always get very useful nuggets from your posts.

Pawsitive thoughts,
