Personal Empowerment - Where Are You Searching For Happiness?

Posted May 23, 2009 07:25 PM
Are you giving your power away while searching for happiness?

In today's world, women are actually in pursuit of happiness. There are books being written and there are seminars all over the world being given on the topic of happiness. Many women are currently experiencing a sense of emptiness, and they want to get rid of that sentiment.

One of the conclusions I have come to, as I am observing and studying successful people is that there is a clear difference between pleasurable moments and true inner happiness.

Pleasurable moments can be things such as travel, going out for a bike ride, reading a good book, playing with your children, what ever brings you pleasure.

However, a pleasurable moment is not the same thing as experiencing inner happiness, and self mastery. There are many individuals who have lots of pleasurable moments, and yet they still feel lost - they do not have that sense of purpose, or a direction in life.

On the other hand you have women who have discovered their purpose, who know there passion, they love their work and may in fact be committed to a particular cause and have devoted most of their time to it.

These ladies accomplish a whole lot and they have a certain sense of satisfaction, yet they may still be experiencing a sense of emptiness . They don't necessarily feel inner joy and happiness either.

So what is the answer?

What if there are two sides to the happiness scale?

I have come to believe that what brings people happiness, along with personal transformation and growth, comes from having balance between pleasurable moments and doing work that is in alignment with your true purpose.

Balance does not necessarily mean half pleasure or half work every day, every week, or every month. But rather that the two aspects are incorporated into your life.

So my question for you today is where do most of your eggs lie? Are they in the basket of seeking plearable moments, or are they in the basket of purposeful meaningful work? ;)

I think for many women, while they are nurturing their family, working in a demanding career, taking care of aging parents and so on... they probably spend most of their time in the work area of life.

Happiness is supposed to be part of the journey every day. You do not go and get happiness only at the end of your working career, at retirement, when your children are grown up, or when you finally get that new shiny object.

We are here on earth to be in joy.

If you want a fabulous resource, you can check out a great book by Tal Ben Shahar entitled, Happier.

Until next time - Seek to find some pleasurable moments while you work on your life purpose.

P.S. Yesterday with the encouragement of a friend, I went for a bike ride, something I had not done in 25 years ...and today with new confidence I went for a 3 hour ride along some fabulous nature trails...

This time spent in greenery, with the sun shining, and hearing the birds was the perfect simple pleasure to give my mind and soul an opportunity to gain clarity. Now I can get back to my purpose feeling rejuvenated!

We are here on earth to be in joy!

Aloha Lynnette!
Once again, I appreciate and applaud your insight.
I have come to understand that happiness is not the absence of obstacles, as I once thought. It is the ability to embrace life including it's obstacles, in confident enthusiasm.
In the past months, I have been engaged in a walking routine that has not only contributed to my physical fitness, it has done wonders for my mental clarity and my ability to appreciate the gifts of this universe. I used to feel that I just simply did not have the time to spend each day being outdoors, and exercising my body. It is so clear now, how that time I give to myself to walk and enjoy my surroundings, quiet my mind, and use my muscles is the time I am most productive in formulating my plan, and strategizing my life of purpose based work. It is not just time well spent, it is essential to my balance of joy and productivity.
Lynnette, I am such a fan of your contributions here, and enjoy your wisdom always. Thank you. I shall read Happier, and be richer for the experience, I am sure.

In Appreciation,
Linda
