Success or "Failure" - What Is Your Perception?"

Posted Feb 8, 2009 09:49 AM
I have come to realize that successful people see failures - disappointments in a positive light, and believe they have what it takes to get over it. They choose to look for the lesson learned, and what value they can take from their setback, rather than focusing on the failure.

If you are a sports fan, you may have actually witnessed the loss of a tournament, a series or a particular game, and seen fans who appeared more upset than the athletes. That is because the athlete knows he or she can, and will get over it. Before long, they are focusing on the next event. Whereas the devoted sports fan gets very discouraged, and frequently takes the loss harder. If you do not believe me go to a teenager's hockey or ball game, and observe the parents.

The difference between successful people and those who are not, is frequently due to the perceptions that they hold. People who experience setbacks or what they refer to as failures frequently take the setback personally. They believe it defines them. They let it lower their self confidence and self esteem. However successful people will share with you that the reason they succeed more is because they have usually failed more times. They are simply more persistent.

Next time you experience a setback try re-framing the concept of failure in your mind, as simply one of a temporary setback or temporary defeat. Many of life's failures are simply folks who did not realize how close they were to success whey they gave up.

You may want to redefine the term success. Success is not only the end result. Start giving yourself credit for all the steps you are taking along the way. Praise your attempts and the learning you are doing. The learning if applied holds great value!

Setbacks are a natural part of the process in any new endeavor. You will attempt many things in your new venture. Some will work, some will need tweaking, and some will need to be ditched. If you are not willing to make errors and move to higher levels of achievement, then you are really not ready to learn and to grow.

With the rate of change accelerating continuously, it is essential to committing to being a life-long learner. When you embrace the process of learning, growing and becoming more, life takes on a richly rewarding and satisfying quality. Fulfillment is possible.

You hold the power in your mind. Let go of what others may think! Choose to redefine Success and "Failure".

Hello Lynette

I completely agree with you on the sports issue. Observing through the years parents, who would "curse" the Umpire at the baseball game (my husband).
Now this may be part of the game in some eyes, but the lesson it passes on to the players, sets in motion some values for life. (not always positive).
If we each reflect on our past vs our present, we can all find that our failures have propelled us to a new place, and will continue to do so.
Thank you for this message!

Warmest Wishes to You!

Hi Lynette,

Ahhh yes, the magic words...Perception is Everything This is so true, and is an ongoing lesson in my life.

The word failure used to be a very shameful thing to me, and being the first in the room to give me a bad time about so-called failures was...me. Me, my own worst enemy, and such a tough task master.

By learning to live in the moment, and redefine what the word failure is in my head ( I like your temporary setback definition), my new perception is that it is...happily... a stepping stone to successes in life.
