I have a gift for you.

Are you marketing on the internet? If the answer is yes, than you will want to read this post.

There are a few key elements that Google will utilize to rank your site. This is a pretty deep subject and has many variables but here are a few of the things that Google will look at when evaluating your site.

1) The age of your site. The older your URL is the more Google will honor you over your competition.

2) How many back links you have, and the quality of those links.

3) Does your URL have your key word that you are trying to rank for in it? This, by the way does not seem to hold as much weight as the age of the URL.

4) Does your title, header and description contain the keywords that you are trying to rank for?

5) Do you have any back links on a .gov or .edu site? It is amazing how much that can help.

6) Do you have quality content both on page and off?

7) Are you listed in the Yahoo and DMOZ directory? These two directories seem to be the most important to Google.

There are a few more factors and if I see that you would like to know more, then I will post them, but these are the big ones. These are the factors that are taken into consideration when Google passes out the honor badges. Those honor badges come in the form of page rank, and the higher your page rank, the more valuable your internet real estate is.

I will take the time to go into a little detail over each point, (in future posts) but I am going to start by giving you a gift.

To be listed in the Yahoo directory, it will cost you $299.00 per year. As I said, Google puts a lot of faith into 2 main directory listings, Yahoo being one of them. So it is $299.00 well spent, but being in one out of the two is better than being in none.

Having said that, being listed in the other directory, the DMOZ, is FREE. Few people take the time to get their site listed here, fewer even know about and fewer yet even know how to do it.

So here is my gift. Be sure to read all of the instructions, it is not hard, but it is important to do it right. If you are not accepted, you do not have a lot of recourse.

Being listed will help you with your ranking, so do not hesitate to move forward on this quickly. It could take them as long as 6 weeks to get back to you, another good reason to get it done now.
