The New Workforce

Posted Jul 5, 2009 09:31 PM
I was working as a caregiver in my niece’s Assisted Living Home, I did not mind working with the elderly, though lifting them was very difficult, the most difficult thing was being treated like trash by “family”. I was glad to be out of that situation and for the past six weeks have been living in denial of my unemployment treating it like a vacation, well monies running out now and time to step back into the real world and look for a job. I began taking anti-depressants in January for a 20+ year history of mild depression, which I had been in denial about. I am just beginning to feel emotionally strong enough to venture out into the New “world of work”. Sometimes it’s easier to stay in the situation you’re familiar with even though it’s not good for fear of finding something that may turn out to be worse. Well, now I have no choice and I’m a little more emotionally prepared than I was a few months ago.
I don’t know which employment direction I’m going in, I’m putting in applications from fast foods to medical assisting for which I do have certification but dread the stressful work environment. These day it seems as though the only secure career path that pays good money is nursing, is there any other career paths that you are familiar with that fairly easy to get training, that pays good?

Zena, you are an angel from God assisting the elderly in the Assisted Living Home, like are all the nursing assistants in this world! There are too many families who don't appreciate the awesome, contual care you give. I saw this with my own eyes working in nursing home and other health care facilities.

Those families cannot provide the care themselves and if they could, many do not want to provide that intense, hands-on, many times 24 hr. care. So they pass on that duty to someone else and they micro-manage them. Studies have shown that folks got much less care (and some are even abused) at home, however expect others to give 'perfect' care all the time.

Just know your loving attention was the best you could do, and acknowledge yourself for that.

RE: careers, I notice you are a massage therapist. Can you obtain a position there while you choose something you love to do? Talk with people you know.... ask them for referrals to people they know where you can use you skills (I'm sure you have many others than healthcare if you think about it).

The best to you.
