Thelma The Guide Dog "Gives Paws of Approval" For First Signing Dolls To Be Donated To Deaf Schools On Valentine's Day February 14th, 2012 All Across The Nation.

We are asking that Lions Club Members take a Signing Doll to a Deaf School near them. Signing Works is the company that makes the Signing Dolls and donating to Deaf Schools. www.SigningWorks.net

This has been quite a project connecting with Deaf Schools and then to coordinate with Lion Club Members to enlist their help to deliver to each Deaf School a Signing Doll.

A little about Thelma... from her owner Roy. Thelma was trained at Guide Dogs for the Blind at the school in Boring Oregon. Thelma is the Mascot for the Blind and has been a service dog for Roy who is Blind. Thelma is yellow Lab is 9 years old and her Birthday is January 3rd.

Is there a Difference between a Guide Dog & Seeing Eye Dog- Guide dogs and seeing eye dogs are the same. No according to Thelma's owner, Roy.

Process of Training Dog- Guide dogs are raised by volunteer puppy raisers for the first year starting at 8 weeks. Puppy raisers do basic obedience and socialization.

After a year the puppy's are returned to the school where the guide training starts. The 1 year old puppy's are housed in a kennel with other puppy's their age, and are taken out almost every day to learn different things they need to learn.

After 6 to 8 months of training the dogs are matched up with a legally blind student. Students are taken to the school where you stay for 28 days where you are trained to follow your dog.

Not all dogs make it through the guide training and some are trained to do other jobs such as search and rescue, companion dogs and some are returned to puppy raisers as a pet.

While at the school after you receive your dog they stay with you 24 hrs 7 days a week. At the end of the class there is a graduation ceremony where you are presented your dog by the puppy raiser if they are available. It is a very emotional ceremony.

We are very excited about this project. The picture of the little girl signing to the doll had not ever signed until she connected with the doll...when she signed "I Love You"...upon where tears started to flow from her mother and staff who witnessed.

Local Utah Business Imagine Lazer & Awards 1287 West 12600 South in Riverton, Utah…is collecting funds to send trophies to AIDS Orphans in Zimbabwe Africa. These children are to receive gift of Trophies and to be recognized to feel special as they have never seen a trophy before.

Jeanette Collins came up with the idea after hearing Getrude Matshe speak recently in Utah. Getrude will be taking Ambassadors in Mid-November to Africa where they hope to have the Trophies shipped and in Africa when Getrude arrives.

SUSANNA BARLOW is the 23rd child of 46 children, the quintessential middle child. Growing up in a Mormon fundamentalist religious home shaped her life values, and her views on literally everything. Ms. Barlow is the author of “What Peace There May Be”… which placed as a Finalist in the 2010 Indie Excellence Awards in the Memoir Category.

This memoir is about growing up while suffering abuse in a polygamous family living in Utah. She says, “In writing the book, I let the rotting parts of myself die and I asked the book to carry the emotional truth that my body could no longer hold.”

Young Susanna didn’t know anything other than the family environment that was created for her; a system without regard for society or man’s laws. Raised in a sequestered home in a busy city neighborhood, everything beyond the front gate was off-limits.
The isolation proved to be a breeding ground for abuse and Susanna struggled to reconcile her desire to escape and her need to belong. The book recounts six critical years of Susanna’s youth during which she struggled to come to terms with the conditions of her life.

This coming of age story is as much a testament to survival as it is to surrender. Pushed to the limits of her coping abilities, Susanna tried everything she could think of to bring about the peace that always seemed out of reach.
In an impulsive moment and an act of daring, she contacted a newspaper journalist and found herself in a predicament that she never before considered. That decision became the impetus that propelled her to where she wanted to be and to finally find personal peace.

Amazing what you might find if you get up early and get out for a walk. Might be a beautiful sunrise, listen to the birds chirping, see a duck coming in for a landing on the lake or a Model T.

I really enjoy the different seasons and the activities of summer. Floating down river in a raft, kayak or on a lazy river in an inner tube. Reading under the shade of a tree in the orchard and when tired of sitting still while reading...climb a tree to pick fresh fruit of your choice. Sleeping out in the tent along the river listening to the sounds of the night which might be a grouse beating it's chest and if you have never heard that sound...might sound like a bear. Riding a bike, having a picnic, fishing by the river, watching an owl bathe in the river, popping popcorn over an evening fire, eating fresh crab on the beach as the waves crash on the sand, watching the sunrise or sunset, white water rafting, water skiing or a walk along a secluded tree shaded path.

Saturday Market is another fun thing to do. Get up early, go have a cup of coffee, scone, or I have eaten fresh crab with a cup of coffee. Works for me. Lots to see and the vibrant colors of fresh flowers, fruit & veggies in season. Many choices of food from Strada, Nuts, Pizza, Asian, Fresh Seafood, Sausage on a stick hot off the grill, Popcorn, Cheese Cake, Fresh squeezed Lemonade or Strawberry Drinks, Chocolates that look like jewels, Baked Goods of all kinds. If you can't find anything there while you eat your choice and listen to the weekly changing entertainment...many restaurants to find other delightful choices.

Author Susanna Barlow's, younger sister Johannah fell from a swing 40 feet on Saturday. In critical condition with so many serious injuries.
