“Soc, do you think I could ever learn to read other people’s minds?”
“First,” he said, “you’d better learn to read your own; it’s time you looked inside to find your answers.”
“I don’t know the answers; that’s why I’m asking you.”
“You know far more than you realize, but you don’t yet trust your inner knower.”
From Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman
Growing up I remember wishing I could read other people’s minds. It would be fun freaking my friends out and seeing the look on their faces when I could tell them exactly what they were thinking. Yet, more than that, it would’ve made my life easier as a kid trying to fit in. I didn’t know how to be myself so I tried to be like everyone else. I was always seeking approval so that people would like me.
People are so in the habit of doing what they think they have to do or someone won’t approve. We constantly ask others their opinion and what they think we should do in any given situation. How could anyone possibly know better than you what is best for you? The answer is, they can’t. Perhaps the reason we want others to tell us what to do is because it is easier. We are not taught to listen to our inner voice. We are not conditioned to be individuals.
Wouldn’t it be amazing if every school added to its curriculum the class, “How to Read Your Own Mind” and was mandatory for every student to master it? Imagine if we learned at a young age that every answer we seek is found within us and it’s easier to find than we think? What if we learned that we could trust that loving inner voice in every situation?
Ask yourself: Are you living by your truth, your plans and your desires? Or, are they someone else’s? Do you want to live a lie or live alive? Living a lie, living for other people, ideas, things, etc., means you don’t value yourself, either consciously or unconsciously, otherwise you wouldn’t think of not listening to who you are and what you came here to do. When you decide to value yourself by listening to and following the guidance of your inner voice that’s when you begin living alive. Start today! Go within and spend some time with your inner knower. You’ll be so glad you did. And, the next time you have a question or a decision to make remember to consult the wisest & best voice of all… your own!
