Pasteurization - heating milk to, at least, 130 degrees F, for at least 45 seconds, or 160 degrees F, for at least 15 seconds. Pasteurization destroys enzymes, reduces vitamin content, denatures fragile milk proteins, destroys vitamins C, B12 and B6, kills beneficial bacteria, promotes pathogens and is associated with allergies, increased tooth decay, colic in infants, growth problems in children, osteoporosis, arthritis, heart disease and cancer. Calves fed pasteurized milk do not fare well and many die before maturity. Pasteurization was instituted in the 1920s to combat TB, infant diarrhea, undulant fever and other diseases caused by poor animal nutrition and dirty production methods. But times have changed and modern stainless steel tanks, milking machines, refrigerated trucks and inspection methods make pasteurization absolutely unnecessary for public protection. And pasteurization does not always kill the bacteria for Johne’s disease suspected of causing Crohn's disease in humans. Most confinement cows are infected with Johne’s. Much commercial milk is now ultra-pasteurized to get rid of heat-resistant bacteria and give it a longer shelf life. Longer shelf life is the biggest key to why they pasteurize milk today. Ultra-pasteurization is a violent process that takes milk from a chilled temperature to above the boiling point in less than two seconds. To ensure that milk is properly pasteurized, a phosphatase enzyme test is done. This ensures that all the phosphatase is destroyed. Phosphatase is what is needed to bind to calcium to build strong bones and teeth. If all the phosphatase is ensured to be destroyed how can the calcium in milk be useful to us or our children? What Started Pasteurization? by Aajonus Vonderplanitz, Nutritional Scientist/Nutritionist/Author (published on RawMilk.org) “A French crystal-chemist by the name of Louis Pasteur, who was born in 1822 and died in 1895, suddenly became famous because he saved the wine and beer industries from devastation. During a period in Europe when molds were affecting wine crops, Pasteur invented a heat process that saved the wine from complete financial failure. By heat processing, he stopped the fermentation and growth of molds in wine, thereby preserving much of the taste, although low quality, and lengthening the shelf life. Pasteur extended this process to the beer industry. Louis Pasteur derived his livelihood from the sale of wines and beer. Pasteur was neither a doctor nor biochemist. He was given an honorary doctorate to make popular the false allopathic theory that shouted: Disease is the result of bacteria. On his death-bed, Pasteur confessed that his and the allopathic bacteria theory was all wrong and that disease was the result of a toxic environment; bacteria were simply the symptom of degenerative tissue and a healthful response of the body to remove the degenerative tissue. Later, the dairy companies found that they could do the same thing with milk that was due to sour, thus increasing their profits by making it possible for them to sell a product that would become less desirable. Less desirable not because soured milk is bad or harmful, but less desirable because mixing it with other foods made everything taste like soured milk. Raw milk never putrefies. It only sours, as in digestion. However, pasteurized milk putrefies. By 1935, an official in a small dairy in a small town in Minnesota, saw the potential of a scheme to curb the market in milk sales. His name was George Pushing, who said, "We can buy the milk that dairy farmers cannot sell by themselves, and by applying heat at a 155 degrees Fahrenheit, even reject milk, will keep for two weeks." He was appointed milk inspector, a great conflict of interest. From drinking his pasteurized milk, later in his life he contracted rheumatoid arthritis, a degenerative disease that manifested itself in his spine. George Pushing confided in Carlet Hoff that he learned of that "x-ingredient" in raw milk that could have prevented rheumatoid arthritis. Before Pushing died, he admitted that the heat process was only an economic ploy to curb the milk market. Little did he know that the very purpose for his job backfired in a very devastating manner. There are many degenerative diseases attributable to the lack of vitamins and minerals. Heat treatment causes many conditions including Lactose intolerance, indigestion and colon malfunctions.” The article above speaks of how conditions like arthritis, lactose intolerance and common gastrointestinal diseases may have started in our society. Many of these diseases were unheard of before the beginning of milk pasteurization. This article also speaks of Pasteur on his death bed citing the weakness of the germ theory. Which brings up another important topic, the overuse of antibiotics. Thank God for antibiotics for the severe bacteria or those with immune systems too weak to fight the bacteria, but antibiotics have been abused and overused. That’s why many bacteria are mutating to new super-germs. If we focus on strengthening our immune systems by feeding our bodies good foods and taking good whole food vitamins and minerals to supplements, we should only need antibiotics in severe situations. Our kids and future generations deserve to be fed well and taught how to help their bodies heal themselves. My staff and I are passionate about this and spend much of our time helping patients recover from degenerative diseases that the medical profession has discarded as unable to help, a “lost cause”, or “don’t have anything else to offer them”. It’s such a great feeling to see these people learn how to make good choices and heal themselves and pass on the good news that we don’t have to accept a disease label. We have lots of testimonies that we’ll be sharing with you in future blogs. Stay tuned for the next blog concerning other milk processing steps. Thanks for reading. In Good Health, Dr. Tiffany

What nutrients are found in milk that the human body can use for nutrition? Does milk from the super market really have lots of Vitamin D and calcium with low fat? Is milk a good source of protein? Do your kids need it to build strong bones? Are there people with milk allergies? Does milk cause arthritis and heart disease? These are some questions that a lot of our patients ask on a regular basis. This subject is so diverse that it will require several blogs to really educate how milk is processed and what value modern day processed milk has. Let’s begin by talking about the common type of milk that you find in the grocery store. It is processed until it turns blue. Then large amounts of dolomite (mined calcium carbonate, that is limestone or rock) are added to make it white. Irradiated (yes, they radiate it) hydrogenated vegetable oil is also added as Vitamin D. Hydrogenated oil has the same molecular structure as plastic. Additionally, irradiated oil is not Vitamin D. But the FDA allows them to call it that. The following processes are used to treat dairy: Pateurization Irradiation Homogenization After the milk is processed there is very little protein due to it being denatured by the heat during pasteurization. The calcium in it is not usable due to the lack of phosphatase enzyme present because of pasteurization. It may contain harmful toxins due to irradiation. Also, hormones, such as, growth hormone and antibiotics may be added. Many are concerned about high fat content so some of the milk fat is removed and what remains is blended by homogenization. Many books have been written on this subject which will be referenced in later posts. Healthy alternatives to milk, done the modern way, are to purchase raw milk from a local farmer after getting to know their farming and milking methods. Almond milk can be found in most grocery stores along with other nut milks. You can get along nutritionally without milk in your diet. Those with extreme milk allergies know this. There is plenty of protein in free range meats. With plenty of dark leafy greens in the diet, such as, broccoli, kale and spinach, you’re sure to get enough calcium. Calcium is a big concern especially with women beginning at 40 and older due to osteoporosis. Oranges contain calcium. Beans, such as, black and baked have calcium. Peas contain calcium. Salmon and sardines are fish sources of this mineral. Other foods are sesame seeds, blackstrap molasses, corn tortillas, and almonds. Good fats are found in butter, fish, fish oil, olive oil and raw nuts. We can get adequate Vitamin D just by exposure to sunlight, even indirectly. In the next post we’ll go through each step to process milk and why it alters the nutrition. In health, Dr. Tiffany

Should we “fear” the swine flu? Is this just media hype to get us into fear and motivate us to go get a vaccination? That would definitely stimulate the economy since it would take about 350-500 million for a vaccination campaign that would benefit those in the pharmaceutical industry and those that profit from administering and distributing the vaccination. This sounds a little farfetched or is it? Read on. Check out the article published in the Health and Science section of Time on April 27, 2009. It discusses heeding the mistakes of the 1976 outbreak. After an outbreak of hundreds with the swine flu and the death of one 19 year old at the Fort Dix base, the President authorized a mandatory vaccination program. “Within weeks, reports surfaced of people developing Guillain-Barré syndrome, a paralyzing nerve disease that can be caused by the vaccine. By April, more than 30 people had died of the condition. Facing protests, federal officials abruptly canceled the program on Dec. 16. The epidemic failed to materialize.” Many young men developed paraplegia as a result of the vaccinations. It’s true that this virus is not the same as that virus. The virus has mutated which is what viruses have been doing since their discovery. The virus (rhino virus) of the common cold also mutates but we don’t get vaccinated for the common cold. We use common sense measures and treatments. These mutations are why the flu vaccinations may or may not work from year to year. So it’s a gamble if it will protect you more than it does harm. That gamble is a choice that each individual has to make for themselves. Vaccinations including Tamiflu are very high in toxic mercury. Do you remember in 2005 when the government warned us of the Bird flu and it never materialized? They were recommending that everyone rush out and get Tamiflu. Do you know that only 257 people have died worldwide from the bird flu since 2003? The reason so many people died in 1918 of the flu epidemic was not because of the flu virus but because of Strep Pneumoniae that infected them secondarily. Scientists just figured this out months ago. It’s true that was a very serious outbreak because 50-100 million died within 18 months. Compare those numbers to the one death we’ve heard about with this Swine Flu outbreak. The secondary bacterial infections are much easier to control with modern medicine, so we’re not likely to see a repeat of 1918. The Natural Solutions Foundation suggests this outbreak was man-made and that Big Pharma would benefit greatly. They refer to a top scientist for the United Nations, who has examined the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in Africa, as well as HIV/AIDS victims, has concluded that the current swine flu virus possesses certain transmission "vectors" that suggest the new strain has been genetically-manufactured as a military biological warfare weapon. They cite specific cases where pharmaceutical companies released viruses in vaccines to only release another vaccination to fight the virus that was released. What a way to promote your own business. They even have a name for mixing viruses called “reassortment”. I don’t want to get too far from the Swine flu topic. We can discuss more of this at another time. We all know the symptoms of the flu and with the internet information is readily available for answering any questions. The current swine flu is not airborne so it requires contact for transmission. Transmission control is done by proper hand washing, staying home if you have symptoms, and controlling contact with those who have symptoms. By keeping ourselves healthy in and out of flu season it helps to avoid developing fear when the media reacts. Avoid hospitals to limit your exposure because they are breeding grounds to many bacterial and viral strains. If you or your loved ones do develop flu symptoms then make sure to stay well hydrated. Most deaths from the flu occur in infants or the elderly from dehydration. High fever coupled with decreased appetite, vomiting and/or diarrhea, are a recipe for dehydration. How do we stay well in and out of flu season? Get at least 20 minutes of sunshine per day so your body can manufacture its own Vitamin D. This is a vitamin you should not have to supplement. Get adequate sleep and be well rested. Cook with garlic because it’s so great at destroying bacteria, viruses and fungus. Garlic cloves roasted then blended with real butter to put on vegetables is tasty and very healthy. Don’t buy into the fat scare about butter. The fat in butter when used in moderation is great for us. Every cell in our body has a phospholipid (lipid = fat) membrane. Eat lots of mushrooms, strawberries and some citrus which are all high in Vitamin C. Eat lots of vegetables preferably organic to avoid toxic chemicals, such as, pesticides. Eat plenty of protein in the form of free range meats, free range eggs, and deep coldwater fish. Snack on raw nuts and fresh, organic fruit. Drink lots of water. At least half your body weight in ounces. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds then drink at least 75 ounces of water per day. Cut sugar and simple carbs out of your diet. Simple carbs convert to sugar after digestion and sugar feeds organisms and reduces immune system function. Reduce your stress. Emotional Freedom Technique is a great method that you can learn and do on your own to help manage stress. We’ll have an entire discussion on this for those who are interested. For acute (symptoms that have just started accompanied by fever) flu symptoms, consider the following alternative support to the vaccine. •Glandular support for the Thymus gland (an immune system support gland) and spleen. •Herbals such as Echinacea (especially the angustifolia species) and St. Johns Wort liquid. Yes, many people think of St. Johns for depression but many don’t know it’s a great anti-viral for a select group of viruses. Also Holy Basil and Andrographis. •Homeopathy preparations of Oscillococcinum. •Calcium is great as a supplement for fever control and immune support especially in powder form. •Sesame seed oil is great taken orally. •Orange, yellow and red vegetables and fruits that contain vitamin A are great for flu or viral support and make sure there are enough good fats in your diet to absorb the vitamin A. Good fats are found in eggs, butter, cream, nuts and olive oil. Good fats do not make us fat. Processed or junk foods or too much sugar make us fat. With all the talk of love in the air due to our celebration of Valentine's Day, it was the perfect opportunity to tag on this tough issue. For those of you who have dealt with infertility, it can be a long, frustrating and costly journey. I just received an article from a colleague that highlights some common causes of infertility that can be found in our home. Parts of the article are posted from ABC News and Human Reproduction (journal). According to the article, researchers found PFCs (perfluorinated compounds), "might be linked to delays in getting pregnant. PFCs are everywhere -- in Teflon cookware, shampoos, floor wax, food wrapping, carpet treatments and other cleaning products. PFCs are also present in air and water in the form of industrial waste from chemical plants." "One kind of PFC, called PFOS, increased the odds of infertility anywhere from 70 to 134 percent. Another PFC called PFOA was linked to a 60 to 154 percent increase in the chance of infertility." "In 1981, two out of seven women (PFOA-exposed workers) at a DuPont Teflon plant gave birth to babies with birth defects. DuPont then moved 50 women workers at the plant to reduce their exposure to PFOA." EPA has also ruled PFCs as “likely carcinogens.” If you're trying to conceive, some things to remove from your house are: • Teflon and other non-stick cookware • Microwave popcorn bags • Food Packaging Wraps • Stain-proof clothing • Carpet and fabric protectors • Flame retardants Some alternatives are using stainless steel or cast iron cookware. You can cook with butter and olive oil at low heat, or coconut oil or safflower oil at high heat. Coconut oil has great health benefits for the heart and arteries and has recently been found in studies to help with resistance to MRSA (the drug resistant bacteria strain of Staph aureus). Safflower oil is nutritionally similar to sunflower oil. The oleic acid or monounsaturated form is lower in saturates than olive oil. We'll talk more at a later date on fats. We could spend weeks with information about good fats. Other things to consider are making sure you're getting enough sunlight so you have proper amounts of Vitamin D. You want to begin 3 months before conception adding in Folic Acid and the Omega fatty acids to your diet. Cod liver oil is a good source of this. We like the Nordic brands at our office. Making sure you get adequate protein, lots of fruits and vegetables, free range eggs and raw nuts, gives a good nutritional foundation for growing a bundle of "joy". In the meantime, have lots of fun practicing until the big day of fertility happens. Hugs, Tiffany

Here we go… I’m a little anxious as I type this message. This will be my first of many blogs and I have to admit that I’ve been dragging my feet. To put your thoughts down on paper for the first time is a little scary. I’ve spent several years training to help other people. I was sure I needed more wisdom and information to have something of quality to share. So many thoughts are in my head, it’s just bubbling, waiting to surface but the cautiousness of the unknown has kept me holding back. There comes a time that you know deep in your belly… (just like Ellie and Maya Angelou made reference to, labor pains or birthing) that it’s time to “take the lid off” like John Maxwell encourages us. I’ve always had a desire to write but being a large talker I didn’t have the sureness I needed to get started. It took the encouragement of my husband, many patients/clients and then Ellie and Charlie to get me to finally embrace that those gifts that were given to me are to be shared. I would bypass my destiny by holding it back. I’m passionate about the information I’ve acquired and the gift I’ve been given to absorb that knowledge, knowing that it’s not for myself but to help others reach their full potential in some small way. Each of you have that same given destiny and some just need the help of others, like the Drakes, to fine tune that purpose. I plan to blog each week in hopes of adding health to your life through words that are practical tips. May these words add wellness to your life physically, mentally, and spiritually. I don’t have all the answers. I’ll share suggestions of alternative ways to achieve wellness. It’s a journey. The devotional that I read just today encouraged me to take the first step of this long adventure, in hopes that you too will be inspired to take the first step on a journey to a new, fit, well you, both inside and out. Oftentimes we set out to find happiness, joy, significance or meaning then get disappointed. It’s when we begin to focus on serving others with our whole heart and by doing the work we were created to do, that we find what we need most. Then fulfillment comes naturally and with less effort than we imagined. Then work becomes fun! I hope you’re encouraged to begin sharing. If you’re sitting on the fence it’s time to join us by sharing what’s in your head and heart, following your passion, and finding your purpose to serve.
