I’m Doctor Angela with the She Optimal Community. I’m passionate about pursuing a life of optimal vitality and excited about partnering with women who have the desire to achieve their optimal potential.
I’m going to talk about one of the 8 O’s of the She Optimal process – which is Optimal Acceptance as it relates to aging gracefully. You can play an active role in graceful aging by…
* Applying self-care practices to maintain optimal energy & health
* Enjoying life and being enthusiastic about what it has to offer
* Focusing on what and who is important, and knowing when to let go
* Nurturing meaningful relationships with others and nature
* Choosing positive emotions and optimistic thoughts
* Following your passions and doing what makes you happy
* Fostering creativity, trying new things and exercising cognitive skills
* Living with purpose, compassion, gratitude, humor and adventure
To age gracefully, assume that you will and accept the inevitable changes of aging (e.g., wrinkles, sagging skin, hair loss, changing body shape, stiff joints, reduced visual acuity). Amy Tan said, “If you can’t change your fate, change your attitude.” Your attitude about aging can influence your longevity and ability to stay healthy and active. It’s not just your physical condition that may limit you, but also your thoughts about your physical status, such that if you believe you will decline, then you will… You do have some control over the rate at which you age and your level of functioning by means of exercise, good nutrition, mentally stimulating activities, skin care, healthy sleeping habits, and choosing to love and be happy. Ben Franklin stated, “Those who love deeply never grow old, they may die of old age, but they die young.”
Aging gracefully adds richness to life, along with strength of character, confidence, resilience, and the ability to maneuver better in the world based on past experience and gained wisdom.
To enjoy optimal vitality, what you can do tomorrow to embrace aging gracefully, remain young at heart, and be an active participant in life:
1 – Stay engaged with your world, practice optimism, and follow your passions. Continue to participate in enjoyable, interesting and purposeful activities (e.g., hobbies, learn new things, serve others, travel, meet new people, spiritual pursuits) that keep you mentally stimulated and happy.
2 – Foster meaningful and supportive relationships! Regularly connect with family, friends and social groups, while including people who are younger than you in your social circles. Of note, maintain a great relationship with the most important person in your life - YOU, by being giving and forgiving of yourself.
3 – Celebrate your age with enthusiasm and gratitude for your strength, accomplishments, and overcoming obstacles. Be yourself, maintain a healthy self-image and take pride in who you have become – no regrets!

Today I’m going to talk about one of the 8 O’s of the She Optimal process – which is Optimal Acceptance as it relates to forgiveness.
Are you holding onto some grudges that occupy your thoughts and cause emotional distress? Is it time to let them go? Your body and mind will sure thank you for it!
Forgiveness can be difficult, especially when you consider what the other person did to be hurtful, mean, a betrayal… But forgiveness is about making the choice to set yourself free from the mental suffering. As Lewis B. Smedes said, “To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.” You cannot change what happened in the past, but you can release yourself from the negative grip it has on you in the present.
What you forgive is not the hurtful behavior, but the person who may be struggling and didn’t know better (e.g., desperate, ignorant, lacking skills/knowledge), or was unaware of your feelings about the situation. It’s important to put yourself in his/ her shoes to understand what may have influenced the behavior, which may help you not take it so personally. As William Arthur Ward said, “Forgiveness is a funny thing. It warms the heart and cools the sting.”
Is it fair to put your rules on others and then get angry with them for not behaving a certain way? Those are your rules not their rules. Also, is it fair to expect things from others that you aren’t giving to them or yourself? For example, you may want to receive unconditional love from others, but do you give unconditional love to them, as well as yourself? Further, are you holding a grudge to give yourself a sense of power over others, try and make others feel guilty, or set up a barrier to avoid communication? Be aware of these possibilities…
Forgiving yourself can sometimes be more challenging, especially due to feelings of guilt and shame. To do so, you must make peace with something you did or didn’t do that you feel bad about – separate who you are from what you did. You can’t change it but you can take responsibility for your mistakes, make amends if possible, and know that you were doing your best at the time. Gain from the experience and do better next time. When you find yourself behaving in ways that don’t please you, just notice and let it go – be compassionate with yourself! You will be tested again and again, which allows you to practice what you want to change about yourself. Also, being able to forgive yourself makes it easier to forgive others.
To enjoy optimal vitality, release yourself of grudges that can take hold of your thoughts and drain your valuable energy. What can you do tomorrow to forgive yourself and others to foster compassion, a sense of peace and better relationships:
1 – Realize that forgiveness involves having a change in heart, with no expectations regarding how the other person should behave – otherwise, the resentment may continue. Forgive in your own way and set boundaries as needed.
2 –When struggling with forgiveness, go deeper beyond the blame to see if there may be some underlying issues that are more pertinent.
3 – Forgive only when you are ready, otherwise it won’t be sincere. The time will come… Know that it may not be a one-time occurrence. You may need to revisit again and again, especially if dealing with a person you see frequently, as the memory and associated emotions may be triggered over and over…

“Yuck!” is what I used to think about avocados – which is likely what some of you currently think about them. I know the options for healthy fats are not too tasty. However, I now love the amazing avocado, which besides nuts, is my choice for an optimal healthy fat.
An acquired taste, maybe so… But these wonderful treasures are bursting with nutrients, protein, fiber, antioxidants, and “good” fats that our body needs for optimal health. Among the many benefits, these “good” fats improve energy levels, immune functioning, cardiovascular health, “good” cholesterol while lowering “bad” cholesterol, skin and hair condition, inflammation, and brain performance. Also, they may even slow down the aging process…
Did you know that the amazing avocado is a fruit? I enjoy cutting through the hard and bumpy outside skin, in a north to south circle, and into the lovely smooth flesh. What a beautiful green color... such a creamy texture and fresh smell – fabulous! My favorite part is removing the pit, as it is quite an art, you know… I get a kick out of the challenge of using just the right amount of wrist action to embed the knife into the pit at just the right depth, so you can give it a quick twist to remove the pit, but not struggle with knife removal – ok, such simple pleasures.
You know the avocado is ripe and ready to eat when you can press down at the top and bottom with your fingers and it gives way a bit. I refrigerate the ripe ones that I’m not ready to use yet and they are fine for a few days.
I incorporate avocados in various ways into my family’s diet, without receiving one groan, complaint, or funny face from my kids. I use them in salads, soups, dips, sandwiches (sliced or as a spread), guacamole, and even just plain.
I can’t keep enough guacamole (affectionately called “guac” in my family) in our home. Here is a tip to keep it from turning that ugly unappetizing brown color – make it fresh, add enough lime, and cover the leftovers in plastic wrap that is actually touching the surface, to reduce oxidation from air exposure.
To enjoy optimal vitality, consider incorporating avocados into your diet, preferably on a daily basis. It is a fallacy that eating avocados will cause you to gain weight, as long as you eat them in moderation. Your body will thank you for every delicious bite and provide you healthy rewards! So, start appreciating the amazing avocado tomorrow by:
1 – Adding cut up avocados to your daily salad (you do have one daily, don’t you?) – Yum!
2 – Concocting your own delicious guacamole recipes that satisfy your taste buds – Yummy!
3 – Making it a game to create other limitless ways to incorporate avocados into your diet – Even More Yummy!

Today I’m going to talk about one of the 8 O’s of the She Optimal process – which is Optimal Longevity as it relates to quality restful sleep!
Many people sacrifice sleep and think they can get away with it. But inadequate sleep can negatively impact mental acuity, memory, productivity, reaction time, athletic performance, and the ability to manage stress. It can also increase fatigue, irritability, depression, and the chance of accidents and mistakes.
Further, chronic sleep loss has been found to impair some metabolic, immune and endocrine functions, which may contribute to type 2 diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. Some of these changes may include an altered insulin response, increased cortisol, reduced growth hormone, reduced leptin (appetite suppressant), and increased ghrelin (appetite stimulant). These changes in leptin and ghrelin may result in weight gain, and thus undermine an exercise or weight loss program.
Everyone supposedly has a self-determined sleep requirement, with both quantity and quality essential to restful sleep. Dr. Michael Breus, a clinical psychologist and sleep expert, suggests calculating the amount of sleep you require by first identifying your wake up time and then counting backwards by 7.5 hours (5 is the average number of sleep cycles/night multiplied by the average sleep cycle duration of 90 minutes). So, if you need to get up at 6:30 am, then go to bed at 11:00 pm. Ideally, you want to awaken just a few minutes pre-alarm. If you wake up significantly pre-alarm, you may have gone to bed too early. If you wake up to your alarm, then you may have gone to bed too late. It’s not a good indication of restful sleep if you hit the snooze button a few times, still have “brain fog” after a minute of waking up, or rely on a few cups of coffee to get out the door.
It is also important to implement good sleep habits. Avoid strenuous exercise and stressful activities during the evening hours. At least thirty minutes prior to bedtime, allow yourself to “wind down” by doing mindless chores, relaxing, and clearing your mind of unresolved issues. Stop caffeine use after 3:00 pm and know that although alcohol may help you fall asleep, it can result in fragmented sleep. Also, terminate computer and television use at least one hour before bedtime, since exposure to bright light close to bedtime can shift your internal circadian clock (24-hour light-dark cycle that regulates vital rhythmic functions throughout the body including temperature, hormone release, and metabolism) and lower melatonin, which starts the sleep engine. Deepak Chopra suggests sleeping from 10pm-6am because it coincides with your circadian clock. Finally, make sure your bedroom is quiet, cool and dark while you sleep!
To enjoy optimal vitality, make your sleep routine a priority. What you can do tomorrow to better incorporate restful sleep into your life for improved energy, health, mental acuity, and weight management:
1 – Appreciate the role that sleep plays in regards to various physiological functions and do NOT allow anything to rob you of the benefits from this valuable resource! Experiment to identify your optimal sleep amount and take steps to practice good sleep habits.
2 – Create a consistent sleep-wake schedule by going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, even on the weekends. This allows your internal biological clock to know when to sleep and awaken.
3 - Monitor your mattress and pillows for proper spine alignment and support. Don’t forget to replace as necessary!
