There are so many other things that can lead to abdominal bloating such as; air swallowing, lactose intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome, partial bowel obstruction - a blockage at some point in the intestines that can impair the mechanical transit of food, constipation - which is characterised by a reduction in the frequency of bowel motion, fluid retention, menstruation, pregnancy, weakened abdominal muscles, abdominal surgery or obesity. Some rare but more serious causes of abdominal bloating include: Ascites: Feeling bloated due to the accumulation of fluid within the abdominal cavity, called ascites. Often the result of liver disease. Tumours: Very occasionally, you may feel bloated because there is a tumour present within your abdomen, of the ovaries, liver, stomach or elsewhere. The present of a lump or swelling should alert you to the possibility of a tumour or cancer. Infection: Certain parasitic disorders can cause abnormal dilatations of the colon (megacolon) associated with symptoms of bloating. Colon or rectal cancer, Crohn’s disease, diabetes, gallstones, kidney disease, heart disease and ulcerative colitis. Bloating is not necessarily a serious ailment, however, if the symptoms are severe and persistent it is advisable to see your Doctor. Seek medical advice if Bloating occurs with a change in bowel habits, persistent diarrhoea, constipation, blood in the stool, fever, abdominal pain and bloating, nausea or vomiting. Air Swallowing If you swallow large amounts of air, you bowel has trouble absorbing or removing it all from the body fast enough. This means more will stay within the bowel lumen and cause the sensation of a full bowel. Anxiety or nervousness, eating quickly, gulping food or beverages, drinking through straws and chewing gum can all cause you to swallow increased amounts of air. Lactose Intolerance Lactose intolerance is said to afflict approximately 70% of the world’s population to some extent and may also contribute to abdominal bloating. Those with lactose intolerance lack lactase - an enzyme in the small intestine required to break down milk sugar in the body. Avoiding or reducing the amount of foods you consume with milk, such as ice cream or cheese, can help the problem, but this is not always practical. Today several products are available which are lactose-free or can help lactose-intolerant people to digest lactose. Fluid Retention Irregular ovarian function that occurs during menopause and fluctuating oestrogen levels that occur in premenstrual and menopausal women may cause abdominal fluid retention and bloating. Women can retain up to 20 ml of fluid in the abdominal cavity in the days prior to menstruation. Fluid can also accumulate in the abdominal area of both men and women in some cases of heart failure and liver cirrhosis. This type of fluid retention is call ascites. I have one more blog to come on Abdominal Bloating, it is about blood types, the zone exercises and other methods to aid clearing bloating. I find these topics the most exciting! However you will have to wait until late November as I will be climbing Thailand’s Limestone Until then… Shine On! Lauren “A goal is a dream with a deadline” - Napoleon Hill www.shinewellbeing.com.au

Hey there Shiney happy people Part two to Abdominal Bloating is here! "One of the least suspected causes of bloating is “fast food”. While simply not chewing your food properly and gulping it down is the main offender, eating whilst working, driving, talking..." But I don’t have enough time…’ This is one of the common excuses I hear from people to explain their lack of exercise. Without meaning to be rude or point the finger at anyone, just take a second with me here to seriously think about your time. Do you really think that if you were to take even just 30 minutes out of your day to exercise that the world would miss you? That your life would come crashing down and everything would come to a complete standstill just because you took 30 minutes of personal time to attend to yourself, your health and fitness? No offence, but if our previous Prime Minister could afford time each day to go for a walk, then so can you!... Live the Life You’ve Imagined: “the successful person has the habit of doing the things failures don’t like to do. They don’t like doing them either necessarily. But their disliking is subordinated to the strength of their purpose.” - E. M. Gray When I began Personal Training, I worked at Fitness First in Miranda. Every day I would see this lady, who was quite over-weight, come in and train for hours. One day I decided to chat to her and find out exactly what her goals were and how she was progressing. I often spoke to the regulars that came in, I knew many of them were not interested in personal training but I was always happy to offer bits and pieces of help and advice. Within Fitness First, personal trainers drum up most of their business by approaching gym members and offering a complimentary session, in which they get half an hour to ‘wow’ a potential new client. This lady had obviously seen many ‘wow’ sessions, she was quite rude and abrupt when I first approached her. Basically, she wanted weight loss. I didn’t get much more out of her that day than that... With consumers demanding quick convenience foods and becoming more aware of the health dangers associated with traditional ‘fast foods,’ food manufactures are looking for ways to meet these needs, but at what price? While each of us differ in the ratio of carbohydrates we need in each meal, according to our metabolic type, low-carb diets are not really the answer. Emphasis needs to be placed on the type of carbohydrate people are consuming. Look for less processed, low GI carbohydrates which will keep you feeling satisfied and more alert for much longer. Don’t fall prey to ‘low-fat’ foods! In general people have become afraid of the word fat when looking at food. Again, the amount of fat that each individual needs to include in each meal comes back down to their metabolic typing. For people who are protein types, if they continue avoiding fat in their meals they can experience symptoms such as headaches, anxiety, not feeling satisfied after eating and becoming hungry quickly. Quality and the type of fat are also very important to consider when choosing what to eat. For these people, choosing full fat yogurt and dairy for example is beneficial as long as it is organic so as to avoid the toxins stored in animal fat. Consumers need to become aware that sugar is usually the substitute of fat in low-fat foods including the popular low-fat, fruit based snack bars. While they may be a better option to cakes and chocolate bars, the better option is always fresh foods provided by Mother Nature. I’m a huge fan of being able to drink a meal, I love making a good shake. While cafes and bars offering fruit and vegetable juices is a great idea, they are purely a carbohydrate ‘meal’ and go down way to easily and quickly for the amount of kilojoules they can hold. Regardless of your metabolic type, it is essential that all your meals, including beverages, contain carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, it is only the ratios that differ for each person. Shakes are so easy to make! Prepare them before you leave home and be creative! I often use Flaxmeal, eggs, yogurt, olive oil or rice bran alongside fruit and or rice milk when making shakes. Obviously the type of ingredients will be specific to your blood type. One final thought that I would like to add, is slowing down whilst you are eating! It is important to thoroughly chew food before you swallow. Not just because it will help satisfy you and prevent over eating, but because chewing and mixing food with saliva is the first place that digestion takes place. Without trying to gross you out, if you can see what you eaten when you go to the bathroom, you haven’t chewed it properly! Another point to eating slowly is actually stopping and becoming aware of what you are eating, be ‘present’ and enjoy your meal, take yourself away from any stress or distractions while you are eating and continue to breath properly and deeply, this all aids in digestion and can help prevent bloating and a feeling of full but hungry.
