Losing To Gain (Possessions), Part 4

Things, stuff, things, stuff and more things and more stuff. Houses, cars,
stocks, bonds, land, and businesses are just a few of the things and stuff that
people own. Lately, it is hard to find people who have not experienced the loss
of possessions. The current economic climate has heightened people's awareness
of their things, their stuff, and their possessions. The loss of possessions is
the final installment in the series "Losing To Gain". Losing possessions is an
area that is worth examining a little closer.

Everyone has something or multiple things which are near and dear to their
heart. Let's face it, if you worked hard for that car, that house, or that
business your ownership is a serious matter. It has been said that anything you
work hard for is well worth fighting for,if the effort was made to obtain it,
then go the extra mile to retain it. Some would say that these days fighting for
your possessions is becoming a routine task. Many people find themselves in a
position of fighting to keep their things, their stuff, their possessions.

It is amazing how losing one thing or one possession has the ability to start a
cycle of loss. Pat and Paul Possessors are a married couple with two children in
private school, living in a home, with two cars and a mini-van. Pat is a Office
Administrator and Paul is a District Sales Manager and both have worked for
their companies for more than 10 years, with solid retirement plans in place.
The Possessors' take vacations to destinations inside and outside of the
country, several times a year. Pat and Paul are also the owners of a
successful small real estate company. A year ago, Paul was laid off from his
job, the Possessors have seen their lives change drastically. The Possessors
summed up their loss in this way: one car was loss, the children's private
school attendance was loss, the real estate business loss clients, but most
importantly the family loss a major income stream. The devastation of losing
possessions was difficult for the Possessors, yet they were determined to stay
positive. The possessions were important to the Possessors but they were not
their central focus.

The loss of stuff, things, or possessions should not only be viewed as the end,
but as a beginning. When loss of possessions occurs, the obvious questions of
why and how settle in waiting to find answers. Losing possessions should promote
the notion of living with less. Many people have been forced to not focus on the
things they have loss but to learn to live better with what they have left. So
if you have experienced a loss of possession recently and find yourself whining
and complaining about your things and your stuff, get OVER IT!

Life is far more precious than the POSSESSIONS you surround yourself with, like a
blanket of comfort. Take time and assess your loss and see the blessing in
having your life, your health and your family. Losing to Gain (Possessions) can
best be summed up by the comedic genius of George Carlin. In his stand-up
comedy performance, Mr. Carlin exposes how losing your stuff can easily send you
into a crazy state. *Mr. Carlin (R.I.P.) does use a few choice words in his
delivery but he makes you think abou/t you and your stuff.

Losing to Gain (Places)

Have you ever been standing in line at a retail shop, grocery store or bank and remembered you left something or needed one more thing before you checked out? This activity is frustrating when you are also the next person to be assisted with your transaction. Just when you are almost there you lose your place. Or maybe you are reading a book and get interrupted or distracted and do not have a bookmark, you lose your place in the book. What if you are a competitive track and field sprinter and your last time was not your best time, you lose your place in the standings? If you are one of the countless people who have been plagued by the downturn in the economy, you were unable to make your mortgage payments, you lose your place/home.

These days many people find themselves in situations that seem to take them off track, put them out of order and rattle their routines. One step outside of the comfort of the norm and it throws your life into an uproar. It seems that many people feel like the words of the song that were so beautifully penned by Michael W. Smith back in the early '90's. The song, "My Place In This World", speaks clearly to losing your place, and seeking a solution to finding your way back to the LIGHT that holds all the answers. When you lose your place, and it feels like the loss is too much to bear, put your trust in the ONE who will always be there! Losing to gain (Places)...

My Place In This World

The wind is moving
But I am standing still
A life of pages
Waiting to be filled
A heart that's hopeful
A head that's full of dreams
But this becoming
Is harder than it seems
Feels like I'm...

CHORUS
Looking for a reason
Roaming through the night to find
My place in this world
My place in this world
Not a lot to lean on
I need Your light to help me find
My place in this world
My place in this world

If there are millions
Down on their knees
Among the many
Can you still hear me?
Hear me asking
'Where do I belong?'
Is there a vision
That I can call my own?
Show me I'm...

CHORUS

Looking for a reason
Roaming through the night to find
My place in this world
My place in this world
Not a lot to lean on
I need Your light to help me find
My place in this world
My place in this world

Losing To Gain (People), Part 2

Last week the topic of "Losing to Gain" was introduced in the form of several questions, posed to make you ponder the concept of losing. The feedback was great; it is good to know someone is reading these words. Today we will examine the "people portion" of Losing to Gain. Please feel free to share your thoughts on this topic or others that are shared.

We are all born with an invisible expiration date on our foreheads. A person's time of birth is certain and is announced upon their arrival in this world. The wailing cries of an infant are their calling card. The joyous celebration that is had for your birth is a marked difference to the service held for your departure. Leaving here, transitioning, and going home, dying is as certain as our birth.

The human reaction to death is usually filled with sadness, sorrow and surrender. Our hearts are heavy, our hands try to hold on and our heads are helpless in our need to understand WHY our loved one, friend, neighbor, co-worker, or stranger left us in this world. Quite simply, we want answers to the inevitable activity of death. As much as we know death will come, we are most times mentally, physically, socially and emotionally unprepared to face that which death brings. Those who have a spiritual connection realize that "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord". The soul of the saved are released from this earth and the physical shell remains.

So often at the time of mourning people will say, “I am so sorry for your loss". Yet the believer knows that if a person knows the Lord, then they are far from being LOST or a LOSS to those who loved them. When the pain subsides and the peace begins to sustain, you will find a comfort in knowing the loss of people can be seen as a blessing. The loss becomes a gain in the sweet assurance of knowing the dead and dearly departed move on to a place of rest. As much as people hurt when people they love and care about transition from this earth, in time those left behind will see the beauty in the loss and celebrate those who have gained eternal life.

In loving memory of Larry McCormack (Husband of Karen), we met once or twice in this life but I am sure I will see you in the great beyond. For the countless others we celebrate the life you lived and the new life they have gained! Losing to Gain...

Losing to Gain, Part 1

Have you ever loss a person, place, or possession? How did that sense of loss make you feel? Did you feel like you would never get over the loss of that person, place, or possession? Are you consumed with what you felt you have loss? Do you think it is possible to lose and gain? Is your loss too fresh, too new, too raw for you to realize its meaning? There are no "correct or right answers" to these questions, each person responds based on their experience with loss. Losing to gain is a concept, a notion, a viewpoint that requires an introspective journey to healing your feelings and moving past the pain. Losing to gain is best examined by the elements it contains: loss of people, loss of places, and loss of possessions.

Encountering loss, experiencing loss, or evaluating loss has been a "hot topic" of discussion. What are your thoughts on the idea of loss? Give me some feedback.
