Dear Braveheart women.
I am very passionate about the subject of alcohol abuse, a growing problem in modern society.
Having lived with an intelligent man who suffered from severe alcohol addiction I have firsthand experience of the complexities of this disease and its ability to wreck lives.
I am particularly concerned that society is made better aware of this problem. There is an escalation of binge drinking among the youth who are mostly unaware that the figures of people dying under the age of 30 from acute alcohol related diseases has in some place quadrupled in the past four years.
Society sends out a mixed message; warnings about drinking responsibly are stated in tiny and easily overlooked labels on bottles while shiny adverts and product placements send a message that alcohol is “cool”.
In fact, medical experts agree that alcohol is a progressive drug and whether genetically predisposed to alcoholism or not, few can escape problems if they drink in large quantities over time.
People who are confronted with alcohol problems are considered to have no will power and are made to feel guilty for not joining in the drinking. Shame of their situation puts many alcoholics and, more often than not, also their partners in a situation of utter isolation, feeling trapped, with no hope of finding a way out.
This has been a powerful motivation for me to write about the subject. In order to get my message across and to give a holistic perspective of the human face behind alcoholism I have interviewed alcoholics, partners, children, parents and friends of alcoholics, and also health professionals in the field of addiction.
I have translated their incredible experiences into stories of desperation and pain, but ultimately also of hope and escape. I am aware I cannot hold a sales pitch here, but from reactions to the book I have created from these stories, I know that it can help people to recognize that they are not alone and not unique in their situation and that this book can also change the often judgemental opinion of those who have no close experience of alcoholism in their life.
I have already contacted large organizations such as AlAnon and AA, which are doing an excellent job and are also mentioned in my book, just as other organizations alike, but they only endorse writings from within their own organizations.
I would like to reach the large group of people who have not yet found their way to help, because they do not realize that there is help out there and most of all, that their story is not unique.
I am really in need of help and advice on how best to get my message to the attention of those who might be helped by it and would be extremely grateful for any advice you may have for me.
I am sure there are many women out there who are willing to help me send out a strong and important message to the right people, and in particular to the youth of today, as I feel that it all starts with education.
Thank you in advance for any reactions,
Renate van Nijen
