Creating and preserving habitat for birds has never been more important -- as the human population grows, suitable bird habitat is disappearing rapidly, gobbled up by housing developments, roads, shopping malls and airports.
Right now, nearly 80 percent of the habitat on which wildlife depends in the United States is in private hands, and an average of 2.1 million acres are converted to residential use every year.
Which is why we need to make sure that backyards are bird-friendly!
Regardless of size, every backyard can provide vital habitat for birds. Birds choose environments that provide them with food, water and shelter. There are many simple ways that you can enhance your property to make it more bird-friendly, and soon beautiful birds will add color and music to your life all year-round.
Sign the pledge to make your yard a bird-friendly habitat.
The Pledge:
I pledge to examine my property from a bird's perspective and look to provide birds with the three necessities: food, water and shelter.
* Food: Putting up a feeder is an easy way to attract birds, but if you prefer your backyard birds to get a more natural diet, your yard can be landscaped to provide fruits, seeds, beneficial insects and other small animals that birds feed upon.
* Water: birds need a dependable supply of fresh, clean water for drinking and bathing -- a source of clean water may attract birds that don't visit feeders.
* Shelter: Whether it's a safe place for sleeping, a protected haven from the elements, a hiding place to elude predators or a secure nesting spot, providing shelter is an important way to make your property bird-friendly.

We will continue to provide water in our three birdbaths and keep the feeders clean and full of seed or other food. We have also provided plenty of trees and thicket like bushes to provide shelter for the birds.

Here is what I have done, I love birds, i feed them all the time, epically in the winter. But I buy good study birdhouses and I paint them bright colors. I put them up high enough that I know ,cats, dog, or noisy kids can not get them. I have an arbor that during the winter I leave the lights on, so that they can keep a little warm from them. I put the lint from my dryer out and let them make their bird next from it for warm and soft. Hair works real good for this to, like hair from hair brush. We put out pine cones with peanut butter in the winter. Lots of apple pieces, I do always have a lot of birds, the man across the street grips all the time about birds using bathroom on his car, boo hoo. I also have 2 huge pecan trees in my yard, the birds really enjoy this.

I have finch socks, bird feed and squirrel food for all of my little friends. I am sitting in the front room typing this and watching the birds, ducks and squirrels have a great time feeding themselves. I also have fresh water for them too.

You should see the birds that come feed on our dogwood tree. You'll see a mob of little black birds, then the next week, there won't be any more berries.

You should see all the birds that come to visit in my back yard. I don't use any chemicals whatsoever and I dont use any fertilisers either. I just let nature do her thing.

We already have feeders, and many wild areas. We avoid mowing, merly cut paths. We will try to keep the bird bath full of water.

We recently put in a large fountain. We enjoy watching the birds gather around it to drink and splash around.
