In our community the cost of living is very high. Not as high as in a big urban center but higher than one would expect in a northern community. It is very difficult for someone living on a fixed income to find a place to live. If you add to that that the person is mentally ill - no one wants to rent to them. Our government needs to step in and make some affordable housing for people who are mentally ill. It would be great if they had a health care worker at their housing project to help them learn how to live independently. I have a mental illness but I am very fortunate that I am high functuning and no one really knows that I have a problem except my family, my social worker and my doctor. I am able to hold down a job and housing is not an issue for me. But when I go in for my counselling appointments my worker is sometimes very concerned about the people she is trying to find homes for. It is almost an impossible job for her. I'm sure we are not the only community that has this problem. We need to contact our local government and ask them to work on the problem.
