My grandmother told me, “War is our enemy.” My grandmother became an orphan as a result of the Japanese Invasion into Korea when she was 13 years old. My grandfather also became an orphan. My grandmother’s dad and my grandfather’s dad were very good friends and their children were born the same year; an arrangement was sealed between the two friends for their children to marry. At thirteen, they married and had four sons and six daughters. But, they lost three sons, two daughters and their estate during multiple wars. Despite losing everything, suffering, and witnessing atrocities, my grandmother converted her resentment into compassion for the perpetrators of wars.
My grandmother told me, “When you grow up, study the minds of those who started wars, to heal, not to kill them. I want no more blood.” My grandmother asked me to stop wars without shedding a drop of blood and bring worldwide peace.
I want to convey her alchemy—the conversion of resentment into compassion . Her intention was to convey her stories, which she repeated for me and recorded in my heart, my body, and my mind.
I want to hear about your own conversion of resentment into compassion.
If you don’t have any, please practice and let me know. I know you can do it because you are women full of wisdom.
