I have almost finished this painting and today I received the video, "Baby hummingbird rescue". (The link is on the right). As a child, I had many vivid dreams of myself connecting with animals and protecting them. The paintings that I am making now are my way to create this world that I dreamed about and still yearn for.

I am so touched by the relationship that this amazing guy developed with the baby hummingbird that he rescued and then raised. For me seeing this video is like seeing my dreams while I am awake.

Is creativity a gift only bestowed on a small number of people or is it something we all possess? In my very unscientific study of children with boxes of crayons or lumps of clay–watching them dive in with joyful abandon, I concluded that everybody is creative! Some people have just forgotten!

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” – Pablo Picasso.

Somehow along the path of growing up most of us just forget that we are creative. So many people tell me that they can hardly draw a stick man, but drawing and painting are just learned skills, like cooking or accounting and whether or not you can draw has no bearing on whether or not you are creative. Creativity is already in all of us, we may just need to reawaken it.

The process of creating is good for us because it connects us to our soul and brings the unconscious in to conscious. Many people compare art making to meditation and there are similarities in the sense of timelessness and predominance of alpha brainwaves. But for me painting is a lot more fun then meditation. Harvard psychologist, Ellen Langer, has discovered that mindfully creating anything can increase our mindfulness, which has the following benefits: we become more competent, healthy, happy, creative, charismatic, satisfied with our work and to top it off we also live longer. All fantastic benefits from doing something that we enjoy!

The bottom line is that no matter what you are creating, if you get lost in the process, it is good for you! (Scrap booking, pottery, making jewelry, sculpting, writing songs, poetry, books, plays or the combined scrap booking/painting that many people are doing now.) The important thing to know is it is not what you create, but the experience of creating it: getting lost in the process, losing track of time, feeling the joy of expressing yourself, watching what you imagined coming in to form. When you really get into the process of creating, over time, the work takes care of itself.

I believe that creativity is everyone’s birthright and expressing our creativity enriches our lives, even if we never sell a painting, publish a book, record a song or see our play performed.

So lets get out there and create something!

So to recap:
1. We are all creative, even if we think we can’t draw a straight line, and can’t remember a time when we joyfully colored outside the lines!

2. Creating is good for us.

3. It doesn’t matter what our creations look or sound like, or if we ever sell them. What matters is getting lost in a creative process and reawakening our creative essence.

In our next video series we are going to look at some hands on ways to awaken our creativity, so if you haven’t already, join us in the Creative Woman Cafe where we explore the Holy Grail of Creativity and learn to direct our creative flow more productively. I’ve watched “the Secret” a couple of times and what I got out of it is essentially, what we visualize and charge with emotion becomes our reality. At 3:30 Wednesday morning, while I was standing outside in the dark completely amazed, that message went from just head knowledge to an epiphany. The painting I was working on and the process of painting were the catalysts for my epiphany.

I started a painting of myself with Sue, my 27-year-old mare, who has been having neurological issues. I needed an image of what I wanted, so I could better visualize it. I had been feeling a lot of pressure to euthanize Sue, but I felt she could get better, so I wanted to hear what Sue wanted so I would know what to do. I drew a coiled snake, (a symbol of the medical profession), wrapped around my body and talking in my ear, to represent the opinion of the vets who think she will never get better. I drew Sue talking in my other ear.

Creating Unconsciously When I saw how uncoordinated Sue was at times, I began to worry that she would lose the ability to get up. In the back of my mind was that we had to euthanize her mother at 32, when she no longer could get up after she lay down. I started to get up and check her throughout the night and I entered a negative spiral of sleep deprivation and intense worry and fear. The more I worried about Sue, the more she deteriorated. She lost the ability to get up without help. I had completely charged my fearful thoughts about Sue with intense negative emotion and she gave me back what I was creating. On some intellectual level I was aware that I might be playing a role in her deterioration, but I was not able to break this pattern. I had unconsciously created exactly what I didn’t want.

Consciously Creating Remember in the last article I mentioned that it is the process not what you create that is important? Art making brings what is unconscious to our conscious mind. I had been missing my painting class, because I didn’t want to leave Sue for more than a couple of hours, but I had someone who agreed to call me if she lay down, so I went. The painting process shifted something in me and when I went to bed that night it occurred to me that if I visualized Sue getting up by herself and being mobile enough to go out in the pasture and graze and I charged these images with positive emotion, perhaps this would become reality. I visualized this and felt joy at seeing Sue better and I went to sleep (and forgot all about it.)

When I checked her at 3:00 am she was laying down and shivering, so I got help and as I was putting on her halter so we could help her up, she started getting up. She then got up without help and trotted off through the snow to the far end of her paddock. She has not been leaving the shelter area much, as off and on she has been having trouble walking. I have not seen her trot for a long time. My heart leaped for joy and I remembered that I had visualized this a few hours earlier. Now overflowing with joy instead of worry, fear and doubt, I could really consciously create. I visualized her walking confidently through her pasture and effortlessly getting up after lying down. I ran this sequence like a filmstrip through my mind over and over. The change in Sue has been miraculous! Overnight her behavior and coordination dramatically changed. She now is walking all over her paddock, getting up without help every time, grazing through the snow and basically behaving like a normal horse. Today she met me at the fence, something she hasn’t done in months.

You have the power to create heaven or hell. Why not choose heaven?

What do you want to consciously create? It’s OK if you have no idea, just start by creating anything and you will begin to connect to your higher self. Symbols may emerge from your unconscious that will give you clues. Put them in your work and later look them up and see what deeper meaning they contain that you resonate with. Go with what makes you feel good, what has your attention. Listen to your heart, follow your passions, have fun and lighten up. Don’t judge the work, but trust the process, take chances, create on the edge of possibility, work with your mistakes to create something even better… Art is a metaphor for life.

We have been looking at consciously creating the life of our wildest dreams, since I had the epiphany that we create our own reality whether we are aware of it or not. I knew this intellectually, but my experience with my mare Sue took it out of my head and put it into my heart! Today I am going to share with you the 2 ways that I use my painting to help me visualize.

First, if you are having trouble visualizing something, you can draw or paint what you want to visualize yourself an image of it. I was trying something that I found on the internet that suggested visualizing roots growing out of Sue’s hooves. For some reason I just couldn’t visualize it, so I sketched the roots growing out of her hooves. The next time I did this I had an image in my mind and had no trouble visualizing it.

Secondly, you can use the painting to get you into a space where you are better able to visualize. When I look at the painting of Sue, I feel good. I then amplify the good feeling and close my eyes and see Sue getting up with ease, walking and trotting confidently through the pasture, grazing and behaving like a healthy horse. I have to be careful that I don’t get caught up in thinking about how I am going to finish the painting, but I expect that will not be an issue when it is done. My understanding is that feeling the emotions that we would feel when what we are visualizing comes into fruition is even more important than seeing the images, and the painting provides a great way to access positive feelings.

You can do the same thing. Make yourself really comfortable, wrap up in a blanket, sip a mug of warm tea, sit in a comfy chair and relax, looking at your painting. How does it make you feel? When you feel good (joyful, light, bright, warm, peaceful, grateful) then allow your eyes to close and float away in the feeling, intensify it and start to visualize.

I am looking forward to choosing other areas of my life to Consciously Create. What do you want to create? What do you want to create in your life? There are times when you know, so if that’s where you are now, go for it!

However, there are also times when you don’t have any idea of what you want and today I will show you a creative pathway that will guide you out of confusion and uncertainty. Often when you are creating something, symbols just “show up”. I have learned to include them without much analysis, and look them up later for clues to guide me. I’ll share a personal experience that illustrates what I am talking about. I started this painting because I wanted to be able to hear from Sue what she wanted, as I was feeling pressure to euthanize her. So I drew her talking into my ear.

The snake represented the opinion of the vets who think she will never get better. (Symbol of the medical profession) I wrapped the snake around me to show this pressure. Then I remembered that the snake is also a symbol of Feminine Spirituality and I liked that as well, because I have been using the more feminine modes of healing with her, like TT, CST, and essential oils. So the snake could also be a positive image of my connection to the feminine aspect of God.

I didn’t want to split the canvas by putting myself in the middle, so I shifted everything off to the side, but then needed something to balance the composition. I had a stamp of a dragonfly so I stamped some dragonflies in. Several years ago on two different occasions when I was mountain biking thousands of dragonflies flew in a circle around me. Both times it was amazing and I felt there was a message in it for me to discover.

I goggled the symbols in my painting and discovered that they really resonate with me:

Dragonfly: Has huge eyes that allow it to see all 360 degrees around it. One of the things a dragonfly symbolizes is the ability to be able to see beyond the limitations of the human self into the cosmic dance that our Universe really is.

Snake: The coiled snake is a symbol of the cosmic feminine energy that fuels spiritual awakening. Both the dragonfly and snake are symbolic of my journey into Conscious Creation.

The process of painting put me in a receptive state where I could see another possibility/reality. The symbols I used gave me insight into what wants to be created in my life.

As you create, you become more connected to your Higher Self and it becomes progressively clearer to you what you want to create in your life. So if you currently don’t have any idea of what you want, start by paying attention to what shows up around you, (For me one thing was the thousands of dragonflies.) Anything that grabs your attention potentially can contain a message for you to discover. When you express your creativity in any form, you start building pathways that will lead you. Just include what ever you want to and look for deeper meaning later.

Symbols often have multiple meanings so go with the ones that resonate with you the most. When you access your Higher Self, you step into the flow and your life becomes magical and meaningful.

I want to quickly update you on my horse Sue and I, so you can see the possibilities for yourself and your life.

Sue is definitely better, although not 100%, but she is able to walk comfortably around her pasture and graze. Ever since that night when she got up on her own and I had the epiphany, she has been getting up without assistance, and lays down several times on some days. What surprises me is how much I have changed by looking at my painting. I have started to feel very supported, knowing that I am a part of the larger cosmic dance and I am actually comfortable just “winging” her treatment, which is huge for me as before I felt desperate and panicky whenever she had a bad day, and I would call in a practitioner to “fix” her.

Many years ago a good friend told me this saying, “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.” I have found this to be so true. In the last two weeks, three teachers have shown up to give me guidance. The first is Sue, who began to get progressively worse after each treatment, making it clear to me that I needed to try something different. Sue’s Cranial Sacral Practitioner, gave me some great feedback which boiled down to my job is to feel good and be grateful that I still get to enjoy my beautiful mare. She also gave me the number of someone who taught trading from the heart classes. (I trade stocks.) It turns out he no longer teaches this, but was very interested to hear about Sue and encouraged me to work with her myself with an open heart and told me that his dog healed from serious hip dysphasia in 3 months when he did this. Now that I am doing this, Sue is no longer having the severe healing crises that she had from her last 3 CST treatments and the other benefit is that I am also changing.

I am more trusting in the harmony of everything working together for good, more playful and open to just “wing it” and do what ever comes to me to offer healing to Sue. I feel very connected to and supported by Mother Earth, the feminine aspect of God, and Sue. I am amazed how the right people have shown up at the right time and how even Sue started to react negatively to the CST that had been positive previously. My desperation to find a solution has been replaced with a gentle trusting that all is well. I have everything I need.

I have marinated in this image of Sue and our connection to each other, God, the Earth, and the Universe. As I have regularly taken in this image showing that we are all part of the cosmic dance, I have been completely supported and I have changed as a result.

As you can see, allowing your creativity to flow when consciously co-creating, gives you a unique advantage. When you create, you bring what is unconscious into the light. You are able to put things into your work that your conscious mind wouldn’t have thought of. Since you become and attract what you focus on, you are able to attract things that you want at a core level but may not be consciously aware of. (Or may not even know are possible). You can uncover your unconscious desires using your own creative process, and literally “draw” them into your life very quickly.
